Hello VJs, i have a concern regarding the validity of a foreign passport and K-1 visa. I have my embassy appointment on October(hopefully to get approved; double fingers crossed) for my K-1 Visa and my Philippine passport will expire on August 2016. Is there a need for me to renew my passport before i go to my embassy appointment? Or will i be eligible to obtain a US passport once I'm in the US and have my Green Card processed? Please help me with your information and knowledge regarding this. All response will be much appreciated. Thank you thank you!!

No need to renew your passport for your interview on October 2015. In order to travel to the US, you need a passport that's at least 6 months from expiring.

Since you are entering on a K1 visa, you will receive a 2 year conditional greencard after adjustment of status (AOS) and keep your Philippine passport. Once married and you want to renew or change the name in your passport, you have to go to a Philippine embassy in the US. If you are still married to the US citizen who petitioned you after 2 years, you have to apply for removal of conditions and you will get a 10 year greencard. If you are still married to the same person after 3 years from when you got your first greencard and considering your length of stay inside the US, you can apply for citizenship. Then and only then can you can you start thinking about applying for a US passport.

Again:

Entering on a K1 will give you a 2 year conditional greencard after adjustment of status. You then have to remove the conditions and get a 10year greencard. You will have to keep renewing your Philippine passport until your 3rd year in the US when you can apply for citizenship and you can start applying for a US passport.

Hope that helps.

Consider getting it renewed. You are a long way from obtaining a US passport, assuming their are no delays in the meantime.

FYI The P3 I got says the Passport needs >8 mos validity beyond the issuance of the visa.

Your passport must be valid for six months before you can use it for the interview

Passport needs to be valid at time of intrerview as, if approved, they will take the passport for your visa stamp

You'll be fine. The passport needs to be valid 6 months FROM THE DAY YOU GET YOUR VISA not from the day you decide to travel. I traveled in July on my passport that was only valid until December (5 months left on it).

But if you know you're going to live far away from the Philippine embassy in the US you might still want to get it renew prior to the interview.

Passports being issued/renewed in the Phils right now are backed up and taking longer at normal.....you will be fine until you get here provided you get your visa anytime before February. Because of the delay in passport renewals, I wouldn't do it there. I would wait until you come stateside, although the closest Phil embassy may be a far travel for you...you will at least be here and getting settled in with no need for your passport for awhile and have time to get it renewed.
