Hello-

My fiance's interview is scheduled for September 21! I am curious on the specific order of things once the visa is approved. Obviously I know we have to get married in 90 days.

Do I have the order right?

1. Apply for SSN

2. Get Married

3. Apply for Adjustment of Status

4. Apply for permission to travel

5. Apply for Green Card

Can AOS, Permission to travel (is this called Advanced Parole?), and Green Card application happen simultaneously? How quickly after marriage can he apply? What is EAD? At what point in this timeline can he get a driver's license?

I'm pretty confused about everything post interview.... Can anyone point me to a good source? It is hard to follow on the government websites because they all link out to something else, and I'm not sure what forms to do when!

Thank you VJ!

AOS is the process of obtaining the green card. You can apply for AOS, AP and the EAD at the same time yes.

Apply for a SSN after entry and after that go for the marriage license. The EAD is the document that will allow your fiance to work before he obtains his green card. He can get a drivers license once he can gets a SSN.

Print out your I-94 info > https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html

Follow this guide for getting the SSN > http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Follow this guide for AOS > http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

The fees are listed here > http://www.uscis.gov/i-485

The fees for the I-765(EAD-work authorization) and I-131(AP-advance parole for travel) are waived when filed with a pending I-485, so include both of those too. It takes about 60-90 days to receive the EAD/AP combo card, which will allow you to work(along with an SSN) and re-enter the US when traveling abroad while waiting for the green card approval.

You need all the supporting documents for each form as well, so read the instructions for each one. You can also search here on VJ for what to include with each form if you get stumped. There are also example forms here on VJ you can look at when filling out the forms. They can be helpful.

And here are the details you need about whether or not you need to see a civil surgeon > http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/551080-immunizations-ds-3025-or-i-693/

Check with your local DMV on what they will accept for a license. Many states will want at least the EAD.

We applied for ssn after two days after arrival and everything was fine-- they sent a ss card in a week by post. Maybe it depends on the state.

Good luck)

Again AOS is applying for a green card, so when he is approved, a card will be generated and sent to him.

One does not necessarily have to wait 2 weeks anymore to apply for SSN. The system for the most part is now electronic so you should be able to apply the next day. To be safe give it a week.

No need to wait 2 weeks to apply for the SSN since the I-94 is automated and electronic now.

No need for the SSN before getting married, unless you just want to. It is not needed to apply for AOS either.

The I-485 is the form for adjustment of status to permanent residency. A 'green card' is a permanent resident card.

As others have said, no need to wait to get the SSN. We filed two days after entry with no problem and received the card in 1 week via US mail. Also, we did a name change for the social security card 2 days after our wedding. The SSN is needed for many things like insurance and bank accounts, so it makes sense to get it as soon as possible.

I agree with Sand1982. Get the SSN and it will help with opening bank accounts and credit cards. Regarding the driver's license, it looks like you are from California. They will also want his SSN and proof of legal presence, i.e. the I-94 and K1 visa in the passport. In my wife's case, we went to the DMV to apply for the driver's license, but she had less then 30 days left on her visa, so they refused to let her take the written test for the learner's permit. Instead, we were able to apply for the CA ID card, which was good until the expiration of the visa. Another option is to get the driver's license for undocumented aliens (AB60), but we didn't do that. One more tip for the DMV: schedule an appointment online if you are applying for the license.

Good luck!
