A couple of questions about after arriving in the USA with a K1 Visa

Hi to all. I hope someone can help me.

Im arriving on the first week of semptember to the USA with a K1 visa. I have a couple of questions about what to do with the records once I arrive there,

1. when can i apply for the SSN, do I need to wait until I get married or can I fill it before?

2. If i decide to use my future husband's last name, will I have to change all my other documents? for example, my peruvian and argentinian passport (i have dual citizenship), they both are with my maiden name, as well as my peruvian an argentinian ID, will i have to change them with my married name in order to travel abroad (if i ever do it), also, will i have to change my SSN in case i had got it before getting married?

thanks in advance

Get the SSN first as your i94 is in your maiden name, getting married and taking on a new name will result in an error. AOS in the new name and change the name on the SSN card after EAD/AP combo card obtained.

Up to you, either get them changed or just walk with your marriage certificate when you travel to show proof of name change.

In my opinion, I wouldn't bother getting the SSN until you're married - if you plan to change your name. Unless there is some compelling reason to have it immediately? It saves a 2nd trip to the SSA office to do the name change.

I married 2 weeks after entering the US and then applied for it a couple weeks after the wedding...entirely up to you

With regard to your other country's passports, it might be good to consult them directly. I personally only changed my name on my Cdn passport when it was up for renewal a couple years later. During the time when I had US id with my married name and Cdn id with my maiden name, I travelled with a copy of my marriage certificate to explain the difference. No problems.

JDWright said get the SSN first and get married second.

Udella&Wiz said get married first and SSN second.

I'm not sure which is better.

My fiancee just finished the requirements for her passport and it should be arriving in about 3 weeks. So after that, we'll be putting together the original visa packet. But I was planning on meeting her in the US after she got her visa, and going straight-away to the courthouse and chapel, then doing other paperwork, to include the post-marriage stuff. (I'm still not up on the lingo yet.)

When JDWright said something different than my plan, I was thinking about her filing for SSN under her maiden name, even though she would then be married, then reworking it after the other documents arrived. But now I'm not so sure what the best plan of attack would be.

Well, ive been reading a lot. what everyone says, is that, if u fill for SSN, with married name, they wont be able to find her in their system, so, it will be really hard to do it, so, people recomend to do it with maiden name, do the name change for GC, and once you have (now they will have her in their system with married name), change SSN.

that's what im going to do. also, they recomend to fill for SSN 3 weeks after arrival, not sooner, in case they cant see her in their system, so u will save a trip to the office.
