They have been improving steadily in the past few years.. They came in sixth six years ago and finished second or third for the next five years and then won this year.

The powerhouses in this competition are China (first or second since 1997), Korea, and Russia - they seem to be slowly slipping back (this year finished eighth).

Listening to the reports on this there is some concern that the team consists of three white and three Asian boys. The team was built from the top 12 students from competitions and then reduced to six. There were two women in the final twelve but they did not make it to the final six. I hope they address the problem from the back-end (encouraging more women to join, using better teaching techniques, etc) that would make the team better as a whole instead of the usual front end method of choosing one from each "group" which would weaken them as a team.

Anyway, good job team!

Racist and sexist, where are the usual suspects.

The only concerns I heard from the various articles and propagation sites (NPR, Slashdot, etc) was the lack of women on the team.. They (the US team) is working on it though the reasons are more to do with making the team as a whole better by increasing the possible talent pool... The outreach to women is the biggest bang for the buck at this point since you get a 50% swath of the population.

Can we just say congrats to the kids and let them enjoy their moment? After all they aren't going to date until they are 35.

We don't need women. They should be in the kitchen propagating the species and making sandwiches.

Go tell your CABA wife that. Make sure you hide the knives first.

I would, but she was working really late last night. I almost starved!

The kitchen is like an alien world for me. I survived last night on grog alone.

(In all serious for a moment, I did drink grog for the first time last night. I watched a documentary on the HMS Victory over the weekend and was curious what grog was like)
