POE, how long after to get SS#?

My husband is IR1 visa recipient. He just got here on Saturday. How long do you think it will take to receive the social security card? We checked the box on the visa application to have the Social Security card mailed directly to the house. We paid the green card fee (immigrant visa fee) Saturday night. Thanks for your help!

I found the answer to my own question.

"Then, once you arrive in the U.S., you can expect your SSN card at your mailing address in about 3 weeks."

But do you think we can get it sooner? Thanks ?

*** Thread moved from Working & Traveling forum to the Social Security Numbers subforum. ***

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Don't count on it coming in the mail. Some do, most don't. I have been here over a month and my greencard arrived yesterday, but still no SSN. I went down to the SSA office and did the application thing after waiting for three weeks after POE. They couldn't "verify" me in their system, so they copied my visa to "send to Immigration for verification" which could take up to 30 days, they tell me.

You may be one of the lucky ones, but lately, more often than not from what I am reading, you will have to chase it. Good luck!

4 weeks waiting here! I ticked that box for it to be sent to me but I went to SSA 2 weeks after POE. My info was wrong so my documents were copied and they said to come back in 30 days if no card is received by mail. Meanwhile, I WAS scheduled to start working next week but just found out I may not be able to because of no SSN.

I'm feeling upset and confused but I can't do anything but wait and hope that I can start working without one.

My POE was also 30 April...I have to wait until the 15th June to see if I get the card by mail. I have called the SSA to see if I can at least get the number but nothing. Im concerned because of the job. I have been told that some employers will accept you but just not pay until the number is available, but the employer can also choose to not employ.

Good luck with your card.

After submitting application she told me to come back tomorrow, and she told me my SSN next day. Card usually arrives within 2 weeks. I submitted application on 19th, still didn't receive my card. I think you should go to their office, they will tell you your number.

I see in your sig that you received your social security card 5 days after you received your greencard (congratulations). Do you think you would've received it in the mail even if you hadn't resubmitted the application?

Submitted documents to bank - December 4th, 2014

No, I really don't think so. I think it took the application going to immigration to shake it loose. The SSA office had to "verify" my identification with them. Like other VJ posters have said, just because you check the box on the visa application, it does not mean that it will automatically be sent to you.
