CA driver license extension issues with pending I-751

There are numerous threads on VJ discussing this issue; DMV denies the extension of a driver's licence with pending I-751...

My case is as follows:

I receive the "Limited Term Extension" in Oct 2014, and my 2-year CR1 period is between Jan 2013 - Jan 2015, and my driver's license had the exact same expiration date as my Green Card, Jan 2015.

The main part of the DMV letter says the following: "Your limited term driver's license will expire soon [...] you must submit satisfactory proof that your presence in the US has been extended or reauthorized [...] Photocopy the front and back of your legal presence document and the page(s) of your passport, if applicable."

So, I copy my passport and the I-751 Receipt Notice (which includes the 1-year extension authorization from USCIS).

Fast forward to April 2015, I receive a letter from DMV. They returned all the documents that I sent them, including the signed Limited Term Extension and the photocopies of the passport and USCIS receipt.

They also sent a supplement letter, stating that I need to send them "Clear Copies of the front and back of your Permanent Resident Card (valid for 60 days or more).

Well, let's see now.... My PR card a.k.a Green Card has already expired (it expired in Jan 2015), thus the I-751 application to remove the conditions.

I cannot comprehend how to get out of this rabbit hole. If I send them a copy of my GC, it will not satisfy the requirement of being "valid for 60 days or more". I have't even received my I-751 approval!

I'm afraid if I go to DMV, they will take my DL or just give me the runaround treatment...

Unanswered duplicate thread removed.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

In case anyone is reading this old thread....

I went to my local CA DMV office with my DL and GC both of which had expired on the same date and the NOA1 notice. No problem renewing and they barely looked at the NOA1. Got a bit of paper giving me a 60 days licence extension (while they print me a new DL) and my expired GC and DL back. Didn't even pay a fee which as kinda part of my immigration process was a novelty.

Easy peasy. And I didn't even have much to spend the whole morning there.

I went in to the DMV after not hearing back from them for almost 2 months when I mailed in my renewal along with my i751 extension and they renewed it there on the spot. Same for me - I went to the DMV having heard zip after mailing it in. Wish I'd done that in the first place.

@rjm_cmyk Did ever receive your DL? I am going through that process right now and the guys at the Daly City DMV where a bit clueless with the I-751 Extension letter...so had to explain...

Sorry - missed this. Yes it was surprisingly easy - even got a DL for longer than the validity of the I-751 - got a couple of years out of them which was a surprise.  Got my GC now and going for citizenship so will probably wait on that before renewing again.

I went through the same situation. Gave them the letter (in person) and everything, could see they were lost over it. After 2 months and no response whatsoever, I called DMV's legal presence department (916) 657-744 in Sacramento and after like 10 days the license came in the mail, also longer than the I 751 letter. Call them if it takes long.

I did mine via mail and they extended until 2019 (4 years from original issue but with my birthday instead of date of GC expiration).  I sent them the I-751 Extension letter and both sides of my GC (so they can see the alien #'s match and they approved no questions asked.

Well, I don't know which part of California you are located. I renewed mine Sep last year at Culver City, LA DMV with the extension letter. They gave me a 8 years one with no trouble. Also I don't think mailing really works, I've never heard anything back from them. I renewed it at the local DMV office with walk-in
