It appears in Cuba that receiving a packet is optional, not even sure if they produce anything any longer. and they DON'T send it, you would have to pick it up yourself. But all the requirements are available on a website and via an automated voice response system on the main phone line. And interview appt scheduling and payments are handled by a website as well.

So we've just started doing all the things (get medical, get police records, etc). I have sent an email to the embassy to verify that there is nothing he needs to pick up, waiting their response. But in general, we're not waiting for the embassy to do anything.

So if I were you I'd try to be aggressive about finding out if indeed the embassy is going to send anything at all, or if you just need to be taking action to prepare.

Just got the "K1 Instructions" packet from the Tokyo embassy.

The list of requirements seems extremely light .. no mention of affidavits of support or health checks in here .. just birth certificate, japanese ID card, passport and previous passports, and DS-230.

Is this normal? Are they going to ask for affidavits of support, health checks, etc later? Perhaps I'll ask this another forum too.

I was notified that I received an RFE on Saturday. Waiting for the official letter. Good luck to you.

I'd be happy to get an RFE because that'd mean it'd be on someone's desk. When an RFE is satisfied it seems like the approval happens quickly afterwards.

Guess it's kinda like a blessing in disguise then right? The only thing that pisses me off about it is that I have a lawyer (due to the complexity of the case) and I still received an RFE. I should be thankful either way because at least someone was looking at my case (though almost 3 months later and then BAM...I get an RFE). Anyhow if this RFE is for what I think it is...I'm going to go head to head with this lawyer! Anyhow, good luck to you and your fiancé.

NOA2 about 1.5 months ago from CSC and got an initial packet from Tokyo embassy about 1 month ago. Currently chasing down the correct version of a chinese both certificate, which is difficult because we both live in Japan. That's been our major delay.

Sorry for all you TSC folks -- pretty sure I would be pulling my hair out.. especially if we were separated..
