Hi guys,

I am hoping to go for my Florida license in the next couple of weeks, and I was hoping that some of you might have some tips for me? I'm from New Zealand and we drive on the left hand side of the road and the right hand side of the car, so it's been an adjustment learning to do the opposite! I now feel really confident driving here so I thought it would be a good time to go for my test. Is there anything that you wish someone had told you before you went for your test? Any tips for your road test? Anything specific to Florida that may be helpful to know? I still remember my driving test back home (around 8 years ago) and that was a breeze, so I'm hoping this will be the same!

Thanks for any help you can give me! :)

Completely stop at the stop sign.

You will be amazed at how easy the test is. I did not really believe it, but it is true.

Learn where the headlights switch is. I lost points on that. It was on the dashboard, I'd never seen a car like that before. Also learn which side the indicators and windscreen wipers are on, these were opposite to what I was used to.

Windscreen wipers and indicators. Man, My husband teases me still about having the cleanest windscreen in the state. My roadtest here took about three minutes. I drove around the block. Good luck! :)

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Right turn must be into the right-hand lane. Single lane left turn can end in any lane... if there are multiple lanes for left turn, the rightmost lane can end in the marked lane or any lane(s) that may be farther right... all this assumes those lanes are clear. The main thing to take from this is probably for the right turn where you should stay in the new right lane long enough to check traffic before merging left if that is your intention... I don't know what minimum distance that requirement implies. I'd think the ID proof requirements are more difficult than the test, so no worries.

OP - have you done your theory test yet ? If you haven't some revision may be in order. As a UK driver of 30 years most of it is common sense but there are some issues very specific to the US and they certainly came up on my written test which I just failed on the first attempt.

Not yet. I plan on doing all of that closer to my road test so it's fresh in my mind. I'll definitely be super thorough when I'm reading up on things!

Thanks everyone! I'm feeling a lot more confident after your answers :)

I did my written test by mistake, went to enquire and they gave me this form to fill out.

Multiple guess 20? questions, you could work most of them out without knowing anything.

They wanted the manual back.....

Hi I passed mine in March in Orlando. The "road" test is actually behind the tax collectors office in a little area with some stop signs, and parking spot. Basically I needed to switch the car on, after that i needed to go in, press the break, switch the indicators on. Then we went towards test area (stop completely at stop sign, look left and right ) then i was told to go as fast at 30mph and then stop on command, quick but safe. Then reverse on neutral gear (use proper position) then 3 way turn on quite narrow part of the road (use indicators and don't go over the curb) then parking (90degree front first). It's super easy. (I never drove before)

It is not where I breathe but where I love that I live.

Theory test was 20 q's on road signs , have to get 15 at least and 20 q's on driving situations, rules etc, insurance etc, have to get 15 again. I used this to practice http://driving-tests.org/florida/florida-permit-practice-test/ you may also need to pass DATA course, which is a 4 hour online course with questions at the end of each part.

It is not where I breathe but where I love that I live.

Oh and they ask 2 questions before even going to the test area. You have to answer correctly otherwise you failed straight away. I remember only one on rules on parking uphill)

Completely stop at the stop sign.

That's a very good advice. I approached driving test with "what could possibly go wrong with my 10 years of driving experience in much more demanding conditions".

Turned out I almost failed for not stopping at Stop signs (3 times), even though I was sure I did.

36 questions for me - no more than 6 wrong (I got 8). I failed on the more factual questions like what is the % alcohol for a DUI and how high do the sides of a pickup have to be if you want you dog in the back. Don't see much of that in the UK.

Some of the questions were so dumb that if you got them wrong you shouldn't be allowed out of the house :-)

I passed second time with annoyingly only one wrong....

Hi there,

I did not take the road test in Florida, but I've been to Orlando for work and my advice is to watch out for the red cameras, definitely come to a complete stop and know where they are. Not sure where you are, but there were a lot of those cameras in Orlando, I know a lot of people who received tickets.

Best of luck!
