Question: My boyfriend lives and works in Nigeria but is a Ghana citizen. He wants to come visit US. Will he have problems getting a visitor's visa from Ghana since he has nothing to show he'll go back? He will return to Nigeria. Should he try applying through Nigeria sinces he lives and works there? Help!!! Any suggestions?

Goodness you already said it "since he has nothing to show he'll go back?". That being said he truly has no chance.

Regardless where he is interviewing he is a Nigerian (sorry Ghanian. no matter). He has to show very strong ties to Ghana. In other words every reason why he would return to Nigeria or Ghana no matter after visiting his fiancee'. Kind of hard to show since he is already showing immigration intention with you filing a petition or getting ready to.

Usually most Nigerians need lots of money in the bank, a kick #### job that pays good, school enrollment to higher education (like being a doctor), a wife and kids to come home to.

I have yet to read here or anywhere else any Nigerian or Ghanian man or woman who got to visit their fiancee'/fiance' or wife/ or husband while they had a petition in system or even before they filed. Just ain't happening.

I do have one friend who visits frequently his wife in US from Nigerian but he works for the airline in Nigeria so he gets to fly to the US all the time and visit his wife.

But he can always apply that won't hurt any future petition you may file. Sorry for the glum news but its best to keep it real.

He can apply in either country, he has a Nigerian work visa?

Save the money and go visit him either in Nigeria or a third country he can easily visit. His chances of being denied a tourist visa I would estimate are 99.99999% especially based on what you say about him having no reason to return. THAT is what the CO is looking for--a reason the application will return to their home country or at the very least leave the US when the trip is over.

You can try if you so choose, but keep in mind that your money would be better spent on lottery tickets than on his tourist visa.

It's Best that he applies in Ghana.

I know a lot of people trying to " game" the system by getting the VISA abroad. ( ex. canada) while having their vacation there. ONLY to be disappointed and $150 poorer.

Exemption go this are the NON tourist VISA ( J, H etc)

He has reason to return home but his home, work, and bank is in Nigeria. I'm asking will it appear as if he has no reason to return if he's applying in his home country of Ghana not Nigeria?

They are interested in why he will not stay in the US, as a Ghanian he can apply in Ghana, as someone working in Nigeria he can apply there.

Most people would it appears prefer to apply anywhere but Nigeria for obvious reasons.

As stated before its about him convincing the embassy he will return you do that with very strong ties to your own country.I

ts very very hard to prove coming from a country not in the Visitor Waiver program because so many have abused it.

But he should get his evidence together and do try. You never know an approval he may get.

While his chances of getting a visitor visa is virtually nil in both countries, comparatively, if he has to apply, then Ghana is his best option. It's highly unlikely to get a visitor visa at the U.S embassy in Nigeria. At least I know several people who have come here on a visitor visa this year from Ghana who were just University students. I have heard of even Doctors being denied visitor visas in Nigeria...that should be the measuring stick against which you can judge how likely your fiance can obtain a visitor visa in Nigeria.
