i am freaking out a bit because every apartment we have looked at has at least 20-30 bad reviews online. logically, i know that these reviews are spread out over years and considering the hundreds of apartments in every complex, 4-5 bad reviews every year is not a huge deal. but reading about fuzzy black mold covering an entire wall (!!!), drug busts, shootings, car thefts, psycho management, etc, is making me have nightmares! even the higher-end/pricier places we have looked at get the same type of reviews, so it doesn't look like upping our budget is going to make much of a difference.

Sounds like reviews of the apartment complexes around here. Not sure all the stuff posted is real, but you may want to check into duplexes or small houses. There should be some within the same budget or only slightly higher. At least that was the case in our area.

thanks darnell and kay. we looked at complexes cos we liked the idea of amenities - at least there'd be a guarantee of 'stuff' to do within walking distance. but do complexes generally have a higher rate of theft/criminal activity? maybe i am too used to singapore, where many condos have security guards and card/code access to the lifts.

i will go search for some non-apartment complex digs and j can go look at them once he's back in seattle (should be tuesday/wednesday woo!)

Well, you are in a wet place. Wet place = mold.

IMO, apartment complexes and buildings always attract the worst sort and I totally second renting a private place, maybe on craigslist?

I'm pretty happy about where I rent, which is not from a private homeowner but rather from a large complex. Granted it's more expensive but there are certain amenities that you get, like the pool, hot tub, volleyball court, gym, sauna, tanning rooms, etc... Most of the apartments in our complex have their own attached garage and the ones that don't have an attached garage have detached ones. If you buy into a place like this you tend to have to pay HOA (home owners association) or STRATA fees. They're a monthly fee tacked on top of your mortgage, but is normally included in a rented apartment. But many subdivisions also have to pay this. Which I understand for a gated community but we have friends in Colorado Springs that pay HOA fees and have very strict regulations on what they can and cannot have in their front and back yards. IMO that's ridiculous when you own a home and someone says you can't do this or that with your own property.

Anyhow I agree that people always post the worst online. There were bad reviews of our place when hubs initially rented but honestly, I only have a few qualms about it. People pick up after their pets. The grounds are kept clean and the rental people are friendly. I haven't heard much from the people over top of us until this last set (granted I could hear the washer late a night but it only bugged me that one time.) When we leave I'll likely write a positive google review.

Hi Steve !

engage yer house-mate to go get them, now.

report back, when able, the results of yer intermediary.

[definitions:]

house-mate: Tiff

intermediary: Tiff

[/definitions]

Translations. No Speak Gump. Send Wife to get gear. Write here when she puts gear in yer hands.

and that's the truth ! I am same way !!

[William Robert]

uh - there's a song, even. . . [not mine]

My name is William Robert but they call me Bucky Bob.

Ordered new sears ratchet set, open end wrench set, screwdriver set, and Makita 12V set. When they get here, I lay them out on kitchen table. When Tiff ask why I spend money, will answer because Gump took them. She hates it when I buy tools. She'll definitely learn a lesson of the line between generosity and greed....

Welcome to Malaysia ! [leaving behind cheap 1 dollar screwdrivers]

Welcome to Malaysia ! [every pair of pliers in the garage are also gone]

Welcome to Malaysia ! [etc etc]

Why I say Malaysia ? Cause Tiff's Sister said it was ok for Gump to take the tools.

You seem to be negotiating with the wrong human.

Still , fun and giggles :

1. file a police report then list Gump as #1 suspect then

2. get a warrant as its over 18,000 in gear on the theft

I told Gump he can borrow the tools. Knowing they most likely will not be seen at this house again. So naturally, Gump cleaned out some of my most high quality and useful tools.

1- Gump and his wife can never say "Steve wouldn't even lend us his tools"

2- Tiff will recognize greed and advantage taking.

3- spoke to FIL last night, I can almost feel the distain when he asked me how Gump is doing....

I have a lot of tools. And those he took, are the cleanest, newest tools.

Did I ever tell you guys that Gump has no idea how to turn a screwdriver? And that if you're working on something and ask him to to pass you the screwdriver? He'll pinch it between his thumb and index to hand it to you for fear of getting his hands dirty. Quite pathetic....
