Looking at divorce statistics by religion may be a bit surprising. While the assumption may be that people who are practicing members of a religious faith are less likely to divorce, the statistics paint a different picture.

Divorce Statistics by Religion: The Numbers

These divorce statistics come from a study conducted by The Barna Research Group. A total of 3,854 people living in different regions of the United States participated in the survey. Here are the results:

Religious Faith Percentage of Membership Divorced

Non-denominational 34

Baptist 29

Episcopal 28

Pentecostal 28

Methodist 26

Presbyterian 23

Catholic 21

Lutheran 21

Atheist/Agnostic 21

For the purposes of the Barna Group's survey, "nondenominational" includes Christian ministries that are not associated with a particular denomination. Many of their members are fundamentalists.

Divorce Rates Highest for Conservative Faiths

The results of the survey reached the same conclusion as earlier studies that indicate divorce rates are higher among people who are members of conservative Protestant faiths. Being a member of a church doesn't afford couples an immunity from the issues that affect all couples that can lead to divorce.

If you look at divorce statistics by region, people who live in southern states (the "Bible Belt") are at a higher risk of getting divorced than people who live in other parts of the United States.

There are a few reasons why divorce rates are higher in this part of the country:

  • People tend to get married at a younger age
  • Average income per household is lower than the national average
  • Highest level of education completed tends to be lower in states where divorce rate is higher

Top Five States for Divorce

The state with the highest number of divorces in the U.S. is Nevada. It has been known a place to get a "quickie" divorce for years. A person who wishes to get a divorce in Nevada must reside in the state for six weeks before they can file papers to legally end their marriage. The other states that make up the Top 5 for divorce are:

Arkansas

Alabama

Oklahoma

Tennessee

Divorce Rates for Atheists and Agnostics

The Barna Research Group's survey found that divorce rates were lower for people who described themselves as atheist or agnostic. The study results indicate that having religious faith doesn't shield believers from the stresses on a marriage that can led to divorce. Divorce statistics by religion present some interesting numbers for the reader to consider.

Well if the United States allowed honor killings, those numbers would drop across the board!

What is interesting is the main cause of divorce, which does not vary by denomination.

Danno will blow a gasket when he sees this thread!

Why? I sincerely doubt Danno would give a rat's popah. His wife is likely Orthodox, coveniently ignored in the study along with dozens of other religions. Orthodox religions are extremely conservative. The women tend to be HOT. Their divorce rate in FSU countries is extremely high which I attach more to the alcoholism rate among men being 35 times higher than in the United States...not their religion. Who'da thunk there could be something else involved? I think perhaps a more conclusive study would be divorce rates realtive to other factors such as HOTness of the women. The study is interesting in that anyone published it being so incomplete.

Danno will probably not respond.

Although one could assume his silence means he is blowing a gasket. You see hardly any of the "supporters" of Federal Government Healthcare responding to the threads of the disaster we have been fed. And when did they ever respond to threads where gun control gets stuffed? We know they are blowing a gasket but are too ashamed and embarressed to show their avatar. That must be it, right?

Threads like this attract the people who do not value any substance. Anyone interested in such things probably spends their days chasing shiny objects around a room. They'd be fun to tease with a laser pointer.

Ridiculous study, incomplete and inconclusive. I am sure the researchers were granted some $$$ for this. Otherwise there is no raison d'etre for this study.

I do NOT hate Ukraine.

It's amazing how one can spend so much time and effort on things that mean nothing to them. I usually just ignore things that I don't care about, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

Indeed this study very much contradicts one of Danno's nearest and dearest tropes regarding the protection of marriage religious belief, according to Danno-logic, espoused clearly and with redundant regularity.

One need not delve into a deeper discussion of the myriad other factors that lead to divorce because Danno has so repetitively insisted religious belief alone is the cure all for divorce.

The fact that there is more divorce among the religious is old old news.
