Hello My wife has been in the country since last November and we are still waiting for her I-485 NOA2. I was wondering where that would put her in the requirement to have health insurance since she is in limbo and is still waiting for her green card.

I am also wondering if she could be approved for some sort of subsidy from the government since she is just working part time. I have a better job but putting her on my plan would cost 200 more a month. Anyone think she will be evaluated by our joint income or rather single income?

Anyone have any experiences or ideas?

My husband has free healthcare from his job, but to include me he needs to pay an extra value. His company has 4 different types of plan and we choose an intermediate one, because I need to do an special exam each 6 months. He pays right now around $200/month for both of us (health care, dentist and vision). I think that is expensive, because in Brazil since I started to work I never paid health care, but $800 is crazy expensive!!!

Hello, my husband used an online insurance "compare-engine" and he found a cheap for me. its 165 $ per month. If he put me in his insurance it would cost 400$ said his insurance company and his boss. So we did that small insurance. I only have 5 visits per year and stuff like that but I don't mind because it's temporary. Once we get a job we get insurance so no problem.

i never paid for health care in Australia, but we have alot less people. So this is just outrageous in my eyes.

In Germany I never paid too. I did 1 operation, everything covered. I got so scarred about hearing people actually went broke from their medical costs.

I have researched this a little in my spare time. From all I could learn the subsidy is a means tested benefit, but will be available to LPR with 10 year green card.

ok so it wont be available for 2 year gc holders?

Same here, my husband's job just told us that his benefits do not meet the requirements of Obamacare, so his insureance coverage ended 8/31. In order to add him to mine is 785.00 a month. Uggh!!! I did not think about that you have to be a US citizen or LPR for Obamacare. Dang!!! now we have a problem.

I read in another thread that new LPRs (and AOS-pending) will not be eligible for the medicaid expansion, but will be eligible for the tax credits and other subsidies that are used to help buy the insurance if your income qualifies.

So before anyone freaks out, I would wait until more information in available.

as to obamacare, if you were seeking medical insurance for your spouse, did she get a SSN after arrival in the USA? In no, then I suggest that's the one thing holding you up. Sure, it's possible to get medical insurance without a SSN, but WITH A SSN? Life is just so much easier, here in the U.S.A.

In my experience most Australians pay something for insurance. I guess it depends on what plan you've chosen though - my husband pays about $75 a month, he's never gotten it for free (he wishes!). But anyways, I pay about 140 for mine in the US. When we're able to I'll add him to my insurance for a total of about 250 for the both of us and it's only that expensive because I chose the one with Materinty. Insurance can be inexpensive in the states you just need to do some research - and try not to go through your job if theyre not offering a less expensive plan, 800 is way too much - WOW! and ouch for the pocketbook.

I called and asked at Healthcare.gov. They stated that if you have a GC, Temp I-551 stamp, EAD/AP you are eligible for Obamacare. The rep stated that there are no timeframes listed of when receipt of the above was received that keeps you out of eligibility.
