Age Gap, Medical Issue, and Limited Face Time, Oh My!

After lurking on this site for nearly six months, we are finally making our first post!

First of all my fiance and I would like to extend our deepest appreciation for everyone contributing to this forum. Without it, we would certainly be lost, as the K-1 process is confusing and extensive.

We spent months agonizing over every piece of documentation to be included in the K-1 application, and I am happy to report that I finally sent in the package to the Texas lockbox location on August 1st, 2013. I know we have a long road ahead of us and pray that everything works out in the end. We are both super excited and anxious, and also slightly worried about how things will play out.

Our unique hurdles include a ten-year age difference (myself, Kari, the petitioner, a 30 year-old American, and my fiance, Alex, a 19 year-old Brit), a medical issue (Alex is a Type 1 diabetic), and the fact that we have only met in person once (March of 2013).

We would love some reassurance/advice from the seasoned veterans of this site.

Thank you for reading. God speed! =)

Why have you only met once?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Hello, Boiler, thank you for your kind response! It's nice to meet you, too!

I suppose I should have clarified that I went over to the UK for a 7-day visit to spend with Alex. I work full time and do not receive more than a week's vacation per year (although even if I did, I most likely wouldn't be able to drop another two grand on the expense and still manage to plan his arrival and the wedding!). We had an awesome time together, and from what I have read on this site it doesn't appear to be a problem that we have only met in person once before applying for the K-1 visa, but the entire process of having someone judge your relationship is a bit unnerving, at least to me, and so I remain a tad bit paranoid. Hence the reason for seeking reassurance. =)

We have met?

The UK tends to have much more generous holiday entitlements.

Hopefully he'll appear mature at your interview, I'm sure they'll be concerned because of his age he just wants to go to America to party, so at the interview hel need to talk about the life he wants with you I'd imagine. I'm not looking forward to the us holiday entitlement! I'm used to 4 paid weeks a year and an encouraging attitude from your bosses for you to take holiday but when I worked in the us temporarily you felt almost embarrassed to ask for it

Hi, Kari! Welcome, si man. :)

There's a wealth of information in these forums. Do some heavy reading in the UK Regional subforum; there are some knowledgeable and helpful members there.

Here's another (one dude's perspective):

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/410945-k-1-journey-completed/

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Well it depends on where you work I guess. I get 6 weeks a year paid.

The age difference is not an issue. I met here a lady in her late 50's, one time divorce, and a widow from his second husband. Her fiance (now husband) is 27 years younger than her. They went through an AP cause he had his daughter custody but they didn't filed for her, cause she wanted to stay with her grandma. I met people here (usually the man is older) with gasp about 25-38 years (age difference) and people make it. And about his conditions, is not a problem

Hi everyone, this is Alex.

I'd just like to thank you all myself for your kind words of inspiration. I know this process isn't going to be a walk in the park by any means, but I've read up and I'm ready to do whatever's necessary to be with Kari. My only concern really has been the interview. Well, I was kind of unsure about the medical, since I have diabetes, but I mean, it's not exactly a one in a million diagnosis, so I can't imagine it being that big of an ordeal to get it squared away...

Anywho, your replies are appreciated and I'm feeling much better about the process and staying optimistic that this time next year I'll be gearing up for a new life ready to make a new family in a new country.

Again, thanks a bunch for the advice, encouragement, and quelling our concerns! Have a nice evening, everyone =)
