The k1 is a fiance visa, meaning you are engaged to be married. It is not a girlfriend/boyfriend visa. With a fiance visa it is a mutual agreement and understanding to be married within 90 days after arrival in the US. Sometimes the beneficiary will be asked how she was proposed to and what the wedding plans are. Though rings are not neccessary , depending on the embassy they are helpful to proof a bona fide relationship . Photos of an engagement help if not overdone as to look like a wedding. The depth depends really on the embassy and culture.

If you are planning to get married in the 90 days after your entry on to US soil, then you are engaged. What else would you call someone who is making wedding plans with their partner?

Nola is correct- being engaged is a state of mind, it does not depend on a ring or a party or going down on bended knee. If you are truly planning to get married and fulfiling the requirements of the K1 (getting married legally within 90 days of arrival in the USA), then for immigration purposes, you are engaged and can go ahead.

They do like proof of your intending marriage, hence letter of intent from your other half

ring recipt etc.but as you said your planning to marry send him out to get you a ring doesnt

have to be expensive but you then have proof (if they ask.

its a dear process once you finished your k1 journey cash maybe a little tight.

Signed letters of intent to marry are the only requirement.

A ring, or receipt of one is not a requirement. No need to go out and buy one.

No ring needed. Follow this guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide

Technically a ring and proposal is not needed and a letter of intent settles it. However, some embassies do want more proof

and therefore my advice is to have something in mind before the interview. We see too many refusals and lack of bona fide

assumptions to deal with, even with hundreds of communication logs, to not consider a ring receit and photos of an engagement for certain embassies. The flip side being engagement parties being mistaken for traditional weddings.

Find your embassy specific mojo ! One size does not fit all !

London is pretty low-fraud so I doubt many of those things apply to people in every country, in any respect, we submitted just proof of meeting and 2 pictures for our approved I-129F....we submitted no evidence whatsoever for our approved I-130 (London Field Office won't even take it). Our CR1 is approved conditional on results of the medical, but we also went through with 0 relationship "evidence" besides me actually being in the embassy. To compare that to what some might have to go through in a different embassy is really an apples and oranges thing.

It is hard to give advice without really knowing what country OP is dealing with.
