What is Zambia's (a poverty-stricken Southern African country) connection to a small village in Switzerland, the Iran hostage crisis, apartheid, President Clinton, and the biggest tax fraud in US history?

Zambia has the 3rd largest copper reserves in the world, yet 64% of the Zambians live below the poverty line, 80% of people living on less than $2 a day.

When Zambia's economy was crashing under debt from the previous World Bank loans that were given to the country to build roads and power grids for the mining companies' business operation needs; The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the same World Bank have pressured the Zambian Government to privatize the copper mines.

According to Civil Society Trade Network of Zambia, 1997 and 2000 marked the completion of one of the most comprehensive and rapid privatization processes seen anywhere in the world. Under the supervision of the World Bank and IMF, Zambia has been transformed from a socialist economy dominated by the state-owned Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) into a free-market system.

Between 2001 and 2008, the price of copper has nearly quadrupled, yet foreign investors paid virtually nothing in taxes in Zambia. One reason was the transfer pricing. The name of the game was to shift the profits from the countries where the profits were actually made into tax havens.

Zambia became a British colony towards the end of the nineteenth century. For most of the colonial period the country was governed by British South Africa Company as a part of the Scramble for Africa run.

Scramble for Africa, also known as the Race for Africa, was a process of invasion, occupation, colonization, and annexation of African territory by European powers during the New Imperialism period, between 1881 and World War I in 1914.

As Alex Cobham of the Save The Children organization says in the video, "Africa's natural resources are being extracted frequently without countries and citizens of those countries getting their fair share."

The web of deceit and fraud exposed in the above video, which was produced and made available for free by the WHY POVERTY organization, is not only about the big multinationals' shameless looting of the continent of Africa, but it is also about United State's rickety justice system.

Hey, it's the 'rulers' of those countries that are robbing their citizens and not sharing the wealth/trying to replenish it. The same thing takes place in the Amazon as well. Leaders are given a ####### ton of money for loans in exchange for land rights and they end up keeping it for themselves instead of helping their citizens/investing to being able to pay it back. Eventually the land gets forclosed on and the banks get to keep doing what they're doing for nothing.

It's not just the IMF doing this either in buying land leases. Big US banks like Bank of America buy these same type of land leases and make a killing off the extraction of resources.

The reason those people Are in their condition is because-

They don't know how to take it

and / or

To keep it.

Certain things flourish in certain regions for a reason.... not just by happenstance.

Has Haiti taught you nothing?

HAs Iraq not helped?

Your post, though fascinating / interesting in a way very similar to listening to the drip of a leaking faucet, is blah blah blah until you make things personally right by selling everything you have, closing your bank accounts, and giving it all back to the native americans you have been stealing it from.

Example of another liberal who makes his living by pointing out the faults of others

Recently, Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore toured again. Or maybe he does that all the time. This time, he turned up in Gothenburg (Sweden) for the usual alarmist talk. In advance, all distinguished guests were politely advised to – if possible – use any form of public transportation to go to the event, in order to minimize CO2 emissions.

Intriguingly, the Master of World Climate himself arrived in a rental car (with or without driver is unclear), from the airport, and subsequently left the engine running for the entire lecture. That is to say, about one hour. Incidentally, local legislation prohibits – for very good environmental reasons, i e pollution – any car engine running on empty for more than 60 seconds. Fines are severe. As far as I know, he was not fined.

If it acts like a duck and waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck it must by golly be a "if I do it it is OK but if you do it it's taxable" gore supporter

Ahh don't be too hard on Steve, like many libs this is how he sooth3s his conscience.

Yup being the town crier and supporting regulations for other people, companies and lives allows him to have big-screens, drive oil burning cars and live in the typical oversized American house.

Every once in a while I come across a true believer in condemning all the: global warming, mass consumerism, and all that stuff, these folks do more than put curly lightbulbs in or have a 4x8 raised bed to grow tomatoes. I respect them.

Steve I don't respect at least not in this regard.... though I like em anyway.

China #1 purchaser of Zambia copper?

I believe that's true. And I know that China is working on harvesting Afghanistan's vast natural resources also. And Afghanistan has plenty of copper. China is quite good at reaping the benefits of America's hard work.
