something to think about ....

in 1916 prior to the National Defense Act of 1916 (June 3, 1916) the US military was kinda small compared to today. The act authorized almost doubling the regular army to 175,000 (and 286,000 in war). congress also designated the national guard the primary trained reserve, increased funding/ regulation, and authorized its expansion to 450k.

imagine a regular army of approx 100k or even the new large size of 175k ... now compare to today of ~550k active duty.

also of note ...

the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps had ~1200 personnel in 1916 (predecessor to the modern air force)

US Marines were ~13.7k at entry into WWI (closest data i could find to 1916)

US Navy ... i gave up looking for personnel numbers. kept finding boats ....

Currently there are ~1 mil on active duty (add 325k more for the USN) not including reserves.

Lots of this personnel has access to a duty weapon (i think the std service rifle still has the bayonet lug) and just might have access to a bayonet

so ... it's probably questionable if there were more bayonets in the military way back then as compared to now.

now horses ... that's a whole different bunch of horse feathers ....
