Hello,

we recently turned in the application to remove conditions (i-751) for my wife and we got an appointment for her biometrics on August 3, 2012. We attended the appointment and everything went well. My question is.... it's been a little over 2 months... how long does it take to get her RENEWED green card? ... is it 3 months? ... or is that time for some other process? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I-751 often takes the lion's share of a year.

People regularly become eligible (and file for) citizenship before their I-751 is adjudicated.

If you fill in your profile information, people can give you much better answers. If we knew which service center you sent your I-751 too, it would help. We just received our approval notice, but not the card yet, from the Vermont center. We filed in mid January. almost all of the January filers for the California center received their cards last month already.

My wife got her permanent resident card in 9/2010.

We definitely applied to remove conditions before it expired (9/2012)

We went to the appointment for biometrics on Aug. 3 of this year.

The service center for the biometrics was in Van Nuys, California.

So there is a strong possibility that it might take more than 3 months

to get the new green card?...up to most of the year?

yikes :crying:

Yes, there is a very strong possibility it will take more than 3 months. The likelihood is that it will take between 8 to 12 months to get the 10 year green card. You will notice that the first notice your wife received from USCIS - the one where they acknowledge receipt of the I-751 package - also contains a statement that this letter extends the validity of her green card for one more year and is good for work and travel purposes. She will need to carry that letter (or a copy of it) along with her expired green card to show that she still has legal status in the US.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

If the card expired in Sept, I assume you filed to renew in June. CSC is currently processing applications from April (I filed in April). So you're looking at at least another 2 months I would say.

THANK YOU for all the replies!

another question...when you say, "good for work and travel purposes"....regarding the I-751 acceptance document, does this also applies to travel outside the United States? My wife wants to visit her family in Thailand next month and we were concerned that this documentation, along with her expired Green Card would not be sufficient for her to travel out of the country. :(

Vaness&Tony, we filed I-751 at the very end of June (6/30/2012)

Yes she can travel with the letter (MUST be the original) and her expired greencard. I went to Australia in September and returned with the GC and letter.

If you filed at the end of June then it's more like 3 months until you're looking at approval. I filed at the start of April and some people around my date have been approved but not me yet (well that I know of, no updates online).

How is this true? Don't you have to wait 5 years since entering the country to file for citizenship? My wife arrived in the statea in 2010, we just filed for her permanent GC (it's now 2012) and if you say it takes maybe a year, that would be 2013. Wouldn't you still have to wait 2 years (technically slightly less than a full 2 years) until you can apply for citizenship?

08/24/2015: Notice of Action received, Interview letter!

You are eligible to file for citizenship after three years of LPR status when you gained that status through marriage to a US citizen and are still married to that same person after three years (minus ninety days).

Everyone else has to wait five years.
