Hello all,

I heard several people using viber to contact family around the world. I was told I need to upload viber on the phone here in the US in order for it to work. I am visiting my fiancé next week in Africa. My question....do I set it up with a US phone number or local ( Southern Sudan) number. I would appreciate your help.......

also please let me know if there are anything else I can look into to call my hubby.

Thank you so much!

I use tango, viber, magic jack, skype, facetime, google voice, and textfree (pinger) all on my iphone, my wife also has an iphone and the same apps down in colombia, she has an unlimited internet plan which allows her to use the apps to call and receive calls through these programs. Some of these from before (tango & skype) can be used from PC to USA Cellphone.

Good Luck.

It does not matter which number you use since it is a free smartphone service and you won't be billed for calls. Just as long as both of you have the app installed on your smartphones.

You are billed for DATA usage (unless you are connected through wi-fi). Viber requires that you have the correct phone numbers (with country code and all) entered in your contacts. The call is a Voice Over IP (VOIP) type of call, just as you can do with Skype, GTalk and others.

As others said, you both need to have the app installed in your smartphones and data plans to be able to use it OR an internet wi-fi connection. If you use it with Internet, you wont consume phone data.

I admit the call quality used to be better. I use it most for texting my family now. Almost feels like being in the same country :D
