I just chased up my social security number as I applied for it on June 8th. I was given a letter stating it would take around 4 weeks but the lady who gave it to me said up to 8 weeks. The lady at the social security office said their still waiting to verify my I94 with Homeland Security. Should it be taking this long? I hear people are getting their numbers in under a week. Maybe its just a New Jersey thing? Im worried incase my paperwork from POE has been misplaced and they cant find me in the system.

Anyone elses number taking a while?

Might want to e-mail the main SSA office listed on the website and explain the situation and see what they have to say. It might be the person does not know how to use the SAVE database. It should not take this long. You might try a different local office. Just make certain you get results before 74 day on your I-94 or you will have to wait for the EAD or GC before getting a SSN.

Good luck,

Dave

That's a normal process, the woman told me "up to 4 weeks but usually it's faster". I got a letter from the SSA 2 weeks after. Maybe it depends on each state? I would say if the lady told you up to 8 weeks, that's she's used to have results of verification in more than 4 weeks...

If I were you, I would go back to that office with my documentation or even better, email their main office. You can find their email info on their website. When I applied last year, they told me it would take up to 4 weeks and after month, I still hadn't heard from them so I went back. My application was still ''pending''. I was told there was nothing they could do. That being an unacceptable explanation, I emailed the main SSA office and the matter was resolved 3 business days later. I had my SS card a week later.

US citizen since April 2016

Thanks. I emailed them. We'll just wait and see what happens I guess. I only have a month and 10 days left on my I-94.

5 weeks now :( No reply to my email and I got another letter today saying the same thing as the first letter I got. Thats 3 letters. I called the local office last week and they put me through to a voicemail of the guy who deals with this. He didnt call me back. I just called again and was put through to the same voicemail. I doubt he'll call. I just want to know either way if Ive been approved or if Im getting a rejection letter. At least with the rejection letter I can get a drivre license here.

I was told up to 90 days for mine. At the 4 week mark i went into my local office (Miami) and i was told it was approved the same day (lucky timing!) then another 10 business days to actually receive the card. so all up it was about 6 weeks. I know its frustrating but you just have to be patient!

What a load of ####### to say it takes 90 days. We went in and because of a USPS screw-up did not receive the card and went back about 2 weeks later and received a print out of the SSN and the card was re-mailed to the local office and we picked it up when we were able to go there about two weeks later. Total time was one month to receive the card and had the USPS not sent the first card back it would have been two weeks. This is unacceptable and the fact is they are suppose to be working for US and providing their service to US. The problem with waiting is that once the I-94 is within 2 weeks of expiring, you cannot get a SSN until you receive the EAD or GC which means even more waiting on the USCIS to process the AOS. I would go to the local office and make a PITA of myself by asking for a supervisor and asking that supervisor to call some higher up and continue until I got results.

I like the "It was approved the same day" story. Yeah right it was approved 2 week ago, but we have been sitting on it all this time (sorry but I am a real cinic when it comes to the government).

Call the main office and explain what is going on.

I hope you get some results as this treatment is unacceptable,

Dave

Go back to the office you applied at.

Same thing happened to me. 4 weeks after I applied, I still didn't receive anything.

I went back, showed them the old letter. They gave me a new letter saying wait longer, and I had it within a few days.
