No. A marriage license allows you to get married. That's it.

A marriage certificate means you're married. Signed by the person who performed the ceremony, the bride and groom, and their witnesses (if necessary)

At least here in Fort Wayne, IN. you do not get a legal binding document called a Marriage Certificate. The Marriage License you purchase form the county clerk is singed by both persons and the Minster or Judge. Then it is submitted back to the County clerk to be recorded. If you request proof of marriage from the court house what you will get is a notarized Certified Marriage License.

Here in Texas you go and basically purchase the license at the couthouse, at that time no one pronounces you man and wife, so you then present the license to whomever will marry you, then you will receive your marriage certificate in the mail, this is a basic explanation.

YES or NO??

No. At least not here in MN; you get your license, then get married by a judge/ officiant/ priest/ pastor/ mister. Then you are married.

If you request proof of marriage from the court house what you will get is a notarized Certified Marriage License.

When you first apply for the marriage license, you are not married. You are only married after you complete the ceremony and SIGN the paper. Whatever it is called, there is a clear difference in the paper before the wedding and after the wedding.

Im in Texas too. The laws here are that you apply for the license, then you must wait 72 hours from its issue before youre allowed to marry. You can get around this by taking a pre marital course, upon passing the course, you may marry, and they will deduct 60$ from the charges. You can carry your license around and never use it. If you dont use it, youre NOT married

June 18 2010 - RFE returned ( had done it June 7 - but USPS returned grrrr )

NO.

You go to the court and apply for and pay for a marriage license. You must wait at least 3 days before getting married. You must get married by someone authorized to do so:

Persons authorized to perform weddings in Texas include licensed or ordained Christian ministers, priests, Jewish rabbis, officers authorized by religious organizations, justices of the supreme court, judges of the court of criminal appeals, justices of the courts of appeals, judges of the district, county, and probate courts, judges of the county courts at law, judges of the courts of domestic relations, judges of the juvenile courts, retired justices or judges, justices of the peace, retired justices of the peace, and judges or magistrates of a federal court of Texas.

Once you are wed by an officiant, they will sign the license, along with 2 other witnesses. The license gets turned back into the court and your marriage is registered. Then you can receive a certified copy of your marriage certificate proving you are legally married.
