Hello there folks.

just a few queries i need help with if you could.

recently i fell in love with a girl from Nebraska. And i want to move to Nebraska. i literally have no idea what needs to be done. I'm a Computer Technician, home taught, so i don't think i have the qualifications to gain a sponsored employment, but then i have no place to look.

so my idea is to move there THEN look for work. as far as housing costs go. i have asked my better half to check into housing.

so im looking for the cost of simply getting there and green card or whatever sorted

Jay

Under what visa are you going to move? You cannot simply pick up and move to the US, you are aware of that right?

Good luck

Most likely you will have to wait to "move" until you're ready to marry (or already married).

There are no obvious ways for you to get to the USA fast. Depending on how good you are as a computer technician (do you mean jsut fixing computers, or are you a sys admin/ programmer?), you could try for a work visa with a US company, but you'd need years of experience to make up for the lack of formal training. Another option could be to be hired by a multi national like Google or HP in your home country, then after a couple of years ask them to sponsor you to transfer to the US office; some of my Irish friends have done that, but the company will usually only agree if you've been working for them for several years and have a stellar work record.

Unfortunately, you're not allowed to work while on tourist visa.

Could you get your Employer to transfer you?

Visa Waiver Program only allows 90 days and in this time you cannot work nor look for work. It is for tourists. If you want a tourist visa, you can apply for one that may allow 6 months in the US - again, no working either.

Your plan of moving and then finding work won't work out in your favour. Sorry, you need to do some research about your options. You do not want to hurt your chances of immigrating to the US in the future by making hasty decisions now

Good luck

Fair from your side, but what you think the chances are you'll find an employer that will be willing to sponsor you for a work visa ? Fact that you will be present in US will not change anything - you will be unable to work and work visas require expenses on employer's side. Chances are you spend there 6 months (or 3 if you enter on VWP and not overstay) and be nowhere.

OK - first what country are you from?

Not having a formal degree would make an impact, are you currently working for some mulitnational right now?

As computer technician what exactly are your skills and you looking to hired as?

@TyGrys

Im well aware of not being able to work on a tourist visa, the top bit meant money i have already saved

@Boiler

No im currently out of work

@canadian_wife

the top bit is what i was asking about and yes i know i cant work while on a tourist visa. i wasnt aware that i couldnt just go to the us and get work. and this is why im doing the research now because i want this to go smoothly.

@kzielu

I wasnt implying what you thought, now you mention it though i could look around. but i know better to be dependent on such a thing.

@Harsh77

Im from UK - i have an NVQ in intermediate computing (This isnt a huge degree)

I dont work for a multinational.

My skills are hardware maintenance and diagnostics. i have a knack of identifying computer problems exact causes

apart from the short college qualifications. the rest i am self taught and have 2 years practical experience.

Without a bachelor degree, your chance of getting a work visa is zero.

You cannot "move" to the US and look for work. You can visit to look for work. Ultimately no employer will waste his/her time to try to obtain a work visa for an unqualified person.

In the end, your "move" to the US will leave you broke and without a legal job in the US.

Honestly it would be difficult in your situation, none of the visa would let you come and then look for work.

The reason I asked if you are working for multinational then you can look in to transfer as others suggested but from your response that would be out of question for you.

For any employer to file for your H1(work Visa ) it would cost them around $5-7k hence most employer would not file for work visa until one has some exceptional skills.

Without a degree it would be difficult to prove to USCIS the that you got the skills you care claiming.
