Cops at the door

I am sleeping and hear a knock at the door "mom and Casey the cops are at the door and want you, there was an accident". HUH??

We go to the door and there is my van (that I cancelled registration on cuz we got a new Pathfinder...no insurance) moved up to the neighbours driveway and smashed up in the rear. Another car in front of it about 20 ft all smashed up. And 3 cop cars.

Apparently the neighbour saw the whole thing. The idiot smashed my van, took off running, ran back, got stuff from his car and ran again. She called the cops. The cops found him and brought him back over here.

He had a 3 day permit and was saying someone stole his car. So basically that means he has no isurance and I have no insurance so I get nothing for my van. And because he says he was not driving, the neighbour did not see him in the drivers seat, he can't be charged.

So the moral of the story is get a 3 day permit, hit a car, run and you are good to go.

The cop said he is a total idiot and a tweaker and he wishes he could have brought up a warrant or the neighbour would have seen him driving cuz he would have been in cuffs so fast.

Oh and the weird part...last night I was sitting outside and thought 'we need to move that van cuz someone is going to hit it' Yep I should listen to my inner voice.

The good part is it was a 91 Caravan that drove across Canada and from Canada to Arizona twice....so not really worth too much anymore lol.

I had hoped to even get $500 for it. Oh well.

Actually.... advertise it in local paper for parts. parts cars bought whole usually sell for about $100 to parts yard... in pieces to ppl needin the part... $5-$75 depending on piece. I got a manifold for mine for about (yrs ago) for about $15.. try that at a dealer

Well there was $200 of work put into it in the last year so lots of parts are new! lol I think I will call a wrecker and be done with the whole thing.

Donate the car, pick a charity or go to someplace like charitymotors.com and pick your donation site, at least you'll get a $500 tax write off and be doing someone some good.

I actually was involved in something like this one time too. That's why it's important to know your rights. Just sucks that one of your responsibilities is that you MUST have insurance. I hate that $#!^. Someone hits YOUR car and YOU have to pay for it. Makes no sense.

One thing you can do (although it's probably not worth it for a 91 Caravan with twelve million miles on it) is take that person to small claims court. You can go before a judge and present all the evidence (or at least tell your side of the story) and if the judge finds that person was responsible for the damage to your property... they HAVE TO PAY!!!

But, you get $500, your lawyer will charge you $750. Wait til they hit that Pathfinder to take them to court. In the mean time 1-800-SAFE-AUTO... pick up the phone the call is free... play it safe.... SAFE AUTO!

LOL Thanks for the advertisement. I was paying $50 a month for registration/insurance (works different in Canada) from Canada. When we decided not to register it here I cancelled it in Canada.

I always have had insurance, just figures the one time I don't this happens.

I thought of small claims court but this dude probably does not have 2 nickles to rub together. Karma will get him

I was involved in a car accident and wound up at one point almost $1million in debt The guy had only $10k of insurance (state min in FL) and didn't own his home & was 86 & living off ss. Coulda been sleeping on a mattress of millions, but on paper, it wasn't worth it for me to purse

That really stinks !! Similar thing happened to my brand new car a couple of months back, guy backed into its front bumper and ran. We found the car in the parking lot, but of course they denied everything. Cops said they couldn't do anything as this case became "I say, he says" thing...
