I'm still working on this one, but I've realized I have to settle for "just alive enough to keep us going until we can see each other" rather than any approximation of a fully-functioning relationship. Of course, I (like everyone here) think that my own personal situation has more than the usual share of barriers:

*7-8 hour time difference

*snail mail/packages will never have any chance of making it unless we spend $$$$$ on FedEx/DHL

*he works long hours at a very busy job (i.e. no time for personal internet use)

*the power is generally out upwards of 50% of the time (eventually removing the option of internet and phone if it stays out long enough, which it usually does)

*typically very poor phone/internet network reliability so we can very often barely understand each other via phone or Skype

*he lives in an extended family household where space is shared with lots of people, so even if the planets align and there is power AND internet access AND the connection is good enough to use the webcam AND we are both available/awake at the same time, then anything steamy is just not an option at all when there are people *everywhere.*

We manage, and feel close most of the time. It's just the way it is right now, so I do what I can and try not to get too frustrated.

Those are some steep challenges!!! My fiancee and I can speak on Skype several times per week. The connection is bearable (not the best always). She lives by herself so we have privacy. Our time difference is 12 hours so that isn't too bad. I can speak to her at 8:00 am and it is 8:00 pm so very doable. Plus we email each other daily answering the 1000 questions for couples.

Cyber sex really isn't that bad. Once in a while you have to scrape your monitor down and buy a new keyboard, but that is a small price to pay.

Kinda like posting on VJ.

It's just like drinking a beer..... Kick back and crack open a cold one!!!!! Lmao!!!!

We're eight hours apart time-wise, but we try to Skype at least once a day for an hour. I know that's not a luxury everyone has, alas, but it definitely helps when you know you'll see each other daily. We talk about really mundane things, but it feels "normal." I also agree about watching a TV show or movie and making time to talk about it. Since Netflix launched in the UK, I try to point out things he can watch, etc.

Even if I'm out running an errand, I use my cell phone to snap a pic of myself or surroundings and email it to my fiancé to remind him of me and of Portland. He also tries to keep up on news stories out of Portland so we can discuss them and so he can be in touch with his future home.

I also try to send him short YouTube videos of my crazy cat to make him laugh.

Oh, and having a war chest of lingerie helps, too.

Men like to see their woman naked.

Especially at the Walmart.

My wife likes Ahlgrens Bilar, a Swedish brand of marshmallow type candy cars. They used to sell them at IKEA but i've heard they don't anymore. I try sending her some every once in a while.

She also likes Jenka, a chewing gum we have in Sweden. It tastes sort of like root beer. The first time she tasted it, she was like "wow, this is like chewing solid pieces of root beer". And the first time I tried root beer, I was like "this is like drinking Jenka". Anyway, Every time I write her a letter I try to get a hold of at least a pack of Jenka and send it to her with the letter.
