Hello back my friends,

After 5 months of hard trials, I finally got an offer for a good job in Anchorage, Alaska!!!

Yes, it is the last thing i ever imagined. specially I have just moved to new apartment with wife and son :( in new york.

I tried to make some search, but I prefer to hear your experience as well.

I noticed that Alaska has a special rules for everything, even my garmin nuvi 50lm doesn't work there :(. and I'll check for my t-mobile network

any thoughts are highly appreciated

thanks

Send a PM to the member Why_Me -- he lives in Alaska.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

This is what Anchorage looks like in the winter. That water you see is Cook Inlet (Pacific Ocean). A lot of whales come through there...Beluga and Orca along with salmon and smelt.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Congrats for at least finding a job in your field! Will your wife and son be traveling with you to Alaska? Or do you plan to commute between there and New York? How does your wife feel about the situation?

My SO has been here for almost 2 years and he was lucky to find a job down here too. Of course it wasn't in his career field but hey when you have bills to pay you take what you can get. Well he has had the opportunity to go to school and expand his educational knowledge. With the extra schooling he is opening up to new career fields. One of them with extensive traveling opportunities. He is worried about leaving me at home for weeks at a time, but he knows that I have family and good friends here that will close by if I ever need them. I love him even more for being concerned for me but I know he is excited with his new job opportunities. So, in other words it's completely up to you and your wife on what you decide what to do! Good luck with your new endeavors!

The nice thing about Anchorage is that on a clear day, you can see Alaska from there.

Oh Big Lake, yeah that's still Alaska. So Why_Me lives in Alaska. I developed a bunch of properties down there, mostly sands lake. But we threw Anchorage out of Alaska in the mid 1980's for having too many people and acting like a city.

This is off the Knik Glacier, up where it meets the George Glacier, right around the corner from Anchorage:

glacier3b.jpg

I'm recommending the supercub PA-18 with all essential Alaska mods like this one for your stay in Alaska on account of the lack of cabs like you got there in NY. I totaled this one in the Alaska Range in a spin, but the one I got after that is even better.

Alaska checklist:

Four Wheeler

Boat

Snow Machine

Airboat

Airplane

Shotguns 10

Hi Powered Rifles 18 (various caliber from 22-250 to .375 magnum elephant class load)

Handguns 7

Fishing Gear: 2 cases dynamite (not to be use all at once)

Seriously, welcome to Alaska. Anchorage is a modern city. You can handle it. A lot of people commute in from Palmer-Wasilla area, or even over by Girdwood where the skiing is. You might like living right along the Park Strip downtown if you are more of a city person. I think there's only been a couple of joggers killed by moose in the last five or ten years inside the city limits.

 Iv'e fished with dynamite before on Long Lake in Willow...years back. We're living in Dillingham atm but plan on moving back to Big Lake next fall. It was supposed to be this fall but the hospital here extended her contract one more year.

One more thing. 300 mag ftw! Great all around caliber. BTW did you ever do any property development in the Valley with the Schackle family or a a fellow named Jim Riley of Riley Reality?

The wife flying to King Salmon ...she flies out about every other week for work.

And some bear that were right down the road last summer.

lol. Never used it myself. I commercial fished out of Emmonak on the Bering Sea. Y-1 drift gillnet. 93 salmon in one drift. Wee-haw!

Yea. The 300 mag can take down Mr. Grizzly when you are caribou or moose hunting. I didn't work with any other developers down there. Mostly I was buying lots and knocking in roads, getting the building pad established and re-selling.

The wife flying to King Salmon ...she flies out about every other week for work.

Looks like a 206. You can really hammer that landing gear, and it takes surprisingly tough terrain.

And some bear that were right down the road last summer.

God what an awesome bear picture.

Dillingham - wow. You guys are the real deal. You have to float the wood river before you leave there! I've landed on the gravel bars there, and have never seen so many fish. Incredible. Not just every species of salmon, but lots of trout too. BIG ones.
