One other thing that all Italians I have talked to find disgusting in the US is the tuna. I don't know how tuna is in other countries, but in Italy it is firm (and "in olive oil" which makes it taste pretty good) while here in the US it looks like cat food. You can find firm tuna in the US too but it usually costs twice as much as the normal "cat food" tuna. It seems like that if you want to eat something decent here, or made with healthier ingredients, you have to pay more.

I wonder if people from other countries have the same issue with tuna here?

They sell their tuna the same way in Peru, and you can get it here, but for making things such as tuna salad, we find it easier to get the shredded 'chunk' tuna as it is easier to mix. For other recipes, we do use the firm tuna. At least here in NY, it's not that much more expensive. We can even get the Peruvian brand which is imported but we find the taste is very similar so we don't spend the extra $.

One of the dishes we make with the shredded tuna: Causa

Irish Beef; enough said.

I'm sure it has something to do with all those large Irish ranches with miles of barbwire fencing run by Irish cowboys right before round up time when they begin to prepare for the big Irish cattle drives. That and big fat juicy Irish steaks and hamburgers that has made Ireland world renown for it's beef. Just be wary of all those Irish cowboys come branding time.

Ireland = potatoes they learned to grow from the US and whiskey.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Ireland = potatoes they learned to grow from the US who learned to grow them from the British, who got them from the Spanish Conquistadors, who got them from Peruvians, because the Incas were the original cultivators of potatoes and whiskey.

Correction. :P When you're married to a Peruvian you hear a lot about Potatoes. They even have a National Potato day.

Only read the last two pages so I guess I have some catching up to do. lol

I tried the Kobe beef at Megu in NYC. It was very nice. Hershey's chocolate is amazingly awful. Ireland has some of the most delicious cuisine I've ever eaten. It easily compares to the quality and freshness of Denmark.

You have to buy the Albacore tuna if you want the best quality. It's only 99cents a tin at my local grocer, which is a steal.

Okay, off to read the rest of the thread. :)

Potatoes are indigenous to North and South America...the Indians lived off of them...north and south. In fact it was the Spanish who first introduced potatoes to Europe and the same with corn from North, Central, and South America.

The Great Irish Potato Famine didn't affect Ireland though. They had all those famous Irish barbecue's loaded with all that Irish beef to fall back on. :hehe:

I know, but have you ever seen "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" You know how the father always traces everything back to Ancient Greece? Well my father-in-law kinda does that with the Incas. Lots of potato pride.

What does something which happened almost 200 years ago have to do with the quality of 21st century products?

Germany has it's sausage and beer, Ireland it's single malt whiskey, Italy it's pasta, Turks with the kabobs, etc.. and when it comes to beef the US is second to none. Argentina and Australia come in second and third, but this country made it's name off of beef. And btw the ranching techniques that the Aussies use came from the US along with the American Quarter Horses they use on their ranches to this day.

Incas and Mayans pretty much wrote the first chapters on potatoes. Their the ones who gave them to the Spanish.

Understandable. I take offense to any one that tries to pass off half dead European cow meat as better quality meat than US beef.

If you get time, google "King Ranch Texas", or "Stuart Andersens Ranch". Both are about the size of Cork County, Ireland.

Unfortunately I can't afford Kobe beef, but I'd prefer a good piece of Argentinian beef to US beef any time. I hate the quality of the meat in the US... pretty much every piece of beef, pork or chicken I ever threw in a pan there ended up watering all over the place. That's not good quality. The only thing I didn't have that problem with was lamb. Loved the lamb shoulder.

And it took me forever to find good potatos, too. I don't like the white, "mealy" stuff you find everywhere. It always took me a while to get some "golden", firm potatos that actually tasted good without being drowned in gravy or sour cream, lol
