No, reality is 2 things here:

#1 - It shouldn't cost hundreds of thousands annually

#2 - Don't have kids if you cannot afford to fufill their needs.

I'm not sure if people are aware, but you will not pay the same rate for a procedure without insurance as you will with insurance. Insurance companies make "allowable billable amounts" that are significantly lower than what these procedures normally cost. Here's an example. When my daughter was born we both developed an infection during labor. Afterwards, she had to remain in the NICU for one week on IV antibiotics. I will break down her 1 week NICU bill for you. Please note, this does not include the pediatrician, neonatologists or specialists. I got separate bills for those.

Total Charges: $34,050.43

Allowable: $25,537.82

That's almost $9,000.00 more that someone without insurance would have to pay. I'm just saying.... I don't know many people that have $35,000.00 just laying around at their disposal.

My cousin's son has duchenne's muscular dystrophy. It will eventually come to that at some point with him too, as his muscles will continue to deteriorate over time.

I see a lot of patients in the hospital with CP, all of them have lived into adulthood and some live to be in their 60's and beyond. The average cost to care for someone with CP is about $45,000 annually, but they often require someone caring for them 24/7, which takes away the earning potential of that parent.

Paul probably has little outside contact with real people, having real problems, or he'd be faced with having to rethink his very naive view of the costs of having and caring for children.

I find that nowadays there's far less compassion for others and there's more of a "it's your problem, not mine" mentality.

I know that half of the problem are the actual healthcare costs themselves being way, way too high. But insurance companies do have a major part in this too.
