Just popped the question to her on 10-2-2011 while in Gran Canaria Spain))))))). Now I get to start the K-1 jorney. I am in the prosses of getting things together but am stil on the wall on wether I should do it myself or hire an imigration attorney. Part of me just wants the peace of mind to let sombody else handle all the paperwork. Any imput would be helpfull. Thanks.

First of all, congrats on proposing !

You can do it by yourself, but it is going to take some time and patience. I almost hired an attorney for both the K-1 Visa and for the Adjustment of Status but found it to be a nice challenge doing it myself. All the information you can find here with the help of the Forums, Guides, and Sample Forms. A lot of us have been in the same position you are. Good luck and keep us posted !

Actually hiring an attorney will not give you any peace of mind, but just more headache. The only thing attorney does is fills out paperwork with information you have to supply him. Why don't just take time and do it yourself and save this thousands of dollars those attorneys will want.

This website provides you ample of information to do it yourself as well as people are really friendly and will answer all your questions for free.

Note also that attorneys doesn't guarantee any results, while they say they do.

And if you really want to pay, why don't you pay me to do it for you, I won't charge as much as an attorney, will do it for half a price

Good luck on your journey!!!

Congrats!!

ditto on the DIY method for the forms..

attorneys will just fill in the blanks.. from info you still have to dig up and give to them... the money they will charge will be probably what you need for the FEE's themselves..

there is TONS of info, guides and examples for all you have to do..

good luck!!

Spend 30 minutes on reading the I-129F instructions(step 2, general requirements; http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-129finstr.pdf). Print it out or highlight the things that apply to you or you have questions about. In that way, you get the correct info from the right source and THEN you can decide the next steps.

Either way, this is only one step on the immigration ladder and your first time in contact with USCIS. Later on(after you're married you'll need to file for Adjustment of status, then two years later for ROC. In any ways, you have to trust your attourney that he or she knows the process fairly well, and he/she is going to be the one recieving the approval notice and other info - that specefic paper/hardcopy you'll need later on, or at least a copy of it.

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

Click timeline or "about me" for all details.

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until greencard in hand: 655 days

The process is expensive enough without an attorney....

Allen..... I have heard more failure stories, about working with attorneys.

When you speak of 'peace of mind'... you'll get more, when you take the responsibility upon yourself, rather than paying exorbitant fees, and then facing failure.

this whole thing seems overwhelming.

when you put your nose to the gringstone.... it's really quite simple.

None of us like paperwork.

Especially,.. we hate filling out forms.

DO IT.

07/27/2011...........NOA1 received.

12/05/2011...........RFE received.

12/13/2011...........RFE response sent.

12/16/2011...........RFE RESPONSE received by Vermont S.C.

12/22/2011...........Teased by a text-message from uscis, saying they have received my response to the RFE.

12/30/2011...........LA VISA APROVADOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

01/12/2012...........Case Sent To Bogota Colombia, from the National Visa Center.

02/09/2012...........Schedule Interview.

03/23/2012...........Interview (to take place then)!

04/07/2012...........Arrived in USA.

07/01/2012...........MARRIED!

What next?

.......How the days DO slip away!

The wait would be unbearable but it'll be worth it. It strengthens the love, it attaches you even more to each other, it shows how your man would do whatever it takes to be with you, that he will never give up on you because he LOVES you!! All the waits, stresses, tears, heartaches, all the miserable feelings you feel along the way will be paid off once you get what you've been hoping for...oh and WITHOUT PRAYERS? will be like trying to start a fire with water, JUST WON'T WORK!
