Poll: 73 Percent Support ‘The Buffett Rule’, Including 66 Percent Of Republicans

In the first public polling available on the so-called "Buffett Rule" specifically -- the proposal to raise taxes on millionaires advocated by billionaire investor Warren Buffett -- Daily Kos/SEIU's weekly "State of the Nation" survey asked the following: Do you support or oppose ensuring that people who make over a million dollars a year pay the same percentage of taxes or more on their total income as those who make less than a million dollars a year?

The answer wasn't close. 73 percent supported the idea, versus 16 percent who did not, and 11 percent who were unsure. The poll was of 1,000 registered voters.

Kos took the opportunity to revel in the results:

Indeed, every demographic sub-group favors the idea. Republicans back it 66-17. Hell, even self-identified tea partiers, the weakest supporters, are at 52-29. Oh, and those making over $100,000? 73-16.

In recent polling, voters have shown a willingness to include raising taxes within a plan to address the deificit, and especially on those Americans making $250,000 or more. A recent Pew survey showed 66 percent support for that idea, and 63 percent in a poll from CBS News and the New York Times. The President himself has seemingly grasped on to that sentiment, going on the road promoting his jobs and debt reduction plans with populist rhetoric. It's also further evidence that Obama is distancing himself from the ongoing squabbling of Congress, embracing more popular proposals and taking them directly to voters.

The poll was conducted by Public Policy Polling (D) for Daily Kos/SEIU using 1,000 automated telephone interviews with registered voters from September 22nd to the 25th. The poll has a sampling error of 3.1 precent.

All the polls in the world don't change the fact that our government is quite wasteful. Until spending is under control, there is no justification to raise taxes on anyone.

Yep. Aside from the fact that they keep hitting up the same group (the rich) over and over

again and leave more than half the people in this country out of it entirely, no amount of

money is ever going to be enough. If they can't cut spending now, they won't be able to

do it 5 or 10 years from now even if we kick the can down the road by raising taxes today.

so Steven, would you be posting this poll with the same amount of glee if 73 percent supported blocking gay marriage? or perhaps if 73 percent endorsed repealing the civil rights act?

Must be a different majority than support AZ SB 1070, because they were just a "mob" to be disregarded. Seems like a majority of the American electorate only matters to you when they agree with you and not when they don't.

Hahaha what a stupid poll. Of course a large majority of people are going to support the idea that millionaires should pay more taxes. Why? Beacuse the majority of Americans are poor. What percent of our population make under $100k/yr? Why would anyone who makes less than $1MM/year state that they don't support millionaires getting tax hikes. Every poor person in the country is looking for a handout and want the millionaires to pay for it. Why don't they do a sampling of millionaires that would agree to have their taxes increased? I bet there would actually be a pretty decent number that would support a tax hike on themselves, but nowhere near 73%. If millionaires want a tax hike, why do they need for regulation to announce it. Why not just donate the money to the IRS if they want to pay more taxes?

In the first public polling available on the so-called "Buffett Rule" specifically -- the proposal to raise taxes on millionaires advocated by billionaire investor Warren Buffett -- Daily Kos/SEIU's weekly "State of the Nation" survey asked the following: Do you support or oppose ensuring that people who make over a million dollars a year pay the same percentage of taxes or more on their total income as those who make less than a million dollars a year?

Perhaps you'd care to quantify what you mean by "our government is quite wasteful".

What percentage of government spending do you consider to be wasteful?

Which programs do you consider to be wasteful?

apparently you don't see any difference between mob rule and a representational democracy.

You're kidding, right? You really need someone to provide examples of wasteful spending at the federal level? Perhaps if I said we needed to ensure flu vaccines were available you'd ask me to prove that the flu exists?

The poll conducted by the committee for representational democracy (actually representative Republic) will be held next November. The rest is bullsh*t. Hopefully Obama will continue his success in getting Dems tossed from office.

My prediction, you heard it here first...

After November 2012 the Dems will hold the smallest number of elected seats in the House of any party at any time on our country's history and the Dems will be out of power in congress for the next 24 years, minimum. Which means that for the rest of my life I will never have to address the mumblings of liberals as anything serious.

Thank you Obama, it is the change I hoped for!
