Laptop Recommendation?

Macbook Pro or Macbook Air. If you don't want to spend that much, check out Asus, they build a decent laptop but can't touch the quality of the Macs, and this is coming from someone who hates Apple! They make a top quality laptop, they have the best touchpad in the business, and you can also run Windows on them so you have the best of both worlds. They are pricey but they are built much better than the run of the mill brands.

Hubby and I both have Toshiba Satellites and love them. The volume isn't always the greatest but could be my hearing isn't great either. Only problems hubby had was me stepping on it and cracking the screen....but he replaced it himself.

To all those in the know: What are your recommendations for a laptop for MS Office/Open Office, web surfing, movie watching on the road? Moderate price.

Current Dell Vostro is running XP and weighs a ton.

I saw this article and thought of you.

I'm a product manager for a computer part online store, so here's my thoughts.

My favorite brand for laptop is Samsung, because of the sleek design but mainly because they run very quietly.

Their choice of components is always great. I've had two Samsung laptops, and never had a problem.

Also they don't come with lots of proprietary softwares like Dell's and some others.

Best option for multimedia laptop.

I would never buy a Dell because it so much a pain to update. Got to log on their site in order to get new drivers, blabla.

Just a big headache...

Acer laptops are flimsy, I think they're still ok for small budget though, but don't expect much.

Their support is not great. You get what you've paid for.

Lenovo laptops are a very good option for work laptop, very sturdy but not much multimedia features.

VAIO Sony laptops are just overpriced.... You pay for the brand.

Toshiba's are ok for multimedia laptop, but as someone mentionned I think they really have a problem with their sound components.

For Asus, their quality is not regular, I'm afraid it's a matter of luck.

You can get a DOA laptop with any of those brands, it happens. Bad luck, that's it.

Make sure you buy a laptop that comes with a last generation processor (i5 or i7).

Intel i5 is probably just fine for basic office applications.

Before you buy, go make a visit to Best Buy and look at each brand monitor and shell type.

Then you'll know what you want to buy.

PS: I would not buy a laptop that comes with an integrated Intel graphic card.

Even if you don't intend to play games with your laptop, there are so much applications (like flash) on the web that require graphic ressources nowadays.

Pick one with a low entry ATi or nVIDIA card.

Sony Vaio. I bought one in 2007, Intel, Vista never had an issue with it. I gave it to my 9yo in February after I bought a new Vaio, he still uses it for schoolwork, web browsing, games, watch Netflix etc. My wife bought a Vaio in 2009 after her Acer took a #######, she hasn't had a single issue with it. And the Vaio I bought In February has worked perfectly not one issue in my experience with 3 Vaio's. They may cost a bit more, but in this case you really do get what you pay for.

not sure what you mean by flimsy because our Acer has fallen a few times and it is still going strong..lol

I bought my first Acer in 2005 and I have had it thrown at me and it has been kicked around on many planes and in many hotel rooms since then. It still works fine and I upgraded the hard drive and op system easily.

I just bought the latest Acer a few months ago and put extra RAM in and it is great

I drive a Toyota Camry 3.5 and not a BMW

Toyota people need an Acer and BMW people need a Toshiba

Samsung is good for the easily irritated because the drives are very quiet and is probably a good compromise for the conflicted

I had a fujitsu/siemens desktop once and only Fujitsu/siemens stuff worked with the BIOS - I prefer bog standard generic parts and Acer seems to accept anything and drivers are abundant

I am reading this on my generic desktop with Acer screen which is 5 years old and it is great

And the other with the Camry-BMW comparison not sure what this has to do with anything. I ride my bike to the train station for commute to work everyday. On the weekends when hunting or fishing and when taking the kids to their practices and events, I cruise around in a Chevy Tahoe. Can't see how this has any bearing on computers, but figured I'd convey since that seems to be the thing to do here.

My wife's company used to buy Acers. Most died within two years. There were two common issues.

The first and most prevalent was case failure at the hinges. Within the first year a crack forms at one or both hinges until finally the case snaps completely at the hinge.

The second was overheating.
