Hi everyone, I have a question.

well, I'm going to marry in the US next year and my fiance said that if I work, after we get married, he's going to lose his benefits, but if I don't he could get more benefits. The thing is, he's not unemployed so...

has anyone been in this situation before or know any info that could help me to understand it? Of course I want/need to work so I wonder what are the benefits US government can provide to their people (married or not).

Thank you, have a nice week everyone!

Let's get things straigt first.

In order to apply for a fiancee visa, your future husband will need to sponsor you. How he will do it by sitting on unemployment benefits???. He will need to get a co-sponsor. Not every embassy allowing co-sponsoring, you would need to check with yours.

If you will go to work, he might loose benefits (not sure here) as this is not a part of the immigration. If you will apply for additional benefits, then you will become a public charge, and who ever sponsored you will have to pay it back to the government. I think your future husband need to do an additional research, as he is not telling you the whole story.

Good luck on your journey, but I don't think he will get what he wants.

 Thank you!

but as I said he is employed so I wonder if there's any benefits he's getting that I don't know/he wouldn't tell me. No, I'm not applying for addictional benefits, he just said that he gets benefits if he's the only one that works so  I'm confused!

I know.

I just wanna know what are these benefits someone who's employed can get from the US government, I am just curious and I need to know what this is about, I don't want to be fooled by anyone and I don't know anything about it, I'm not a US citizen, that's why I'm asking

I agree, thank you guys

Well, I asked and he said he gets food stamps and mainecare health insurance through the government.

what do you guys think?

Neither of these benefits will increase, because your status when you have AOS will be that of a LPR. A LPR doesn't quality for these benefits until after 5 years of being as LPR, unless there is a Medical emergency reason.

:ot:

You should be concern because your finance is having financal issues, and you will not be able to even work, until 4 to 6 months after you have arrived if you'll have the funds to AOS.

If he receives Food Stamps and Goverment Assisted Medical that is A Huge Problem. Sounds like a part-time job and will not meet Income Requirements in Any Country. It is a Public Charge Issue and a reason for Denial.

It is imposible to get Food Stamps unless way below poverty levels but Medical is Different for various reasons.

I think your guy is going to find his new wife’s attitude is what will elevate him out of the poverty bubble he is putting so much work to keep himself in.

If he is putting effort to remaining below a certain income level for benefits there is a problem. I would be asking him about his health care costs - maybe he has some medical problems that are bad enough that he fears losing that benefit for even a short time.

Good luck

Sounds weird! I would stop and double check this is really what you want.

Move to the USA and never work because he doesn't want to lose his food stamps? Most people do not want to be on food stamps or assistance!! they want to get out of that road soon as they can but he seems to want to sit there and just keep you sitting at home doing nothing.

Do you know why he needs the medical and cant lose it? I know medical coverage is expensive in the US but how are you going to get your own coverage if you cannot work? you cant use means tested benefits like he is!

Does not sound like a safe or happy environment to move to in the USA...
