Or, at the other end of the scale, what if the current administration continues to perform badly and loses popular support to an extent that one of the GOP contenders begins to look like a viable candidate?

I have no reason to believe most of the current candidates would perform any better but would believe that prayer is a suitable solution to our problems.

Maybe these groups who voted for Obama last time would vote for Romney or Huntsman, but not Bachmann or Perry.

I wasn't singling out any one of the GOP candidates. But the possibility that any of the GOP field might prove to be the lesser of two evils in comparison to an Obama second term seems to strike terror into some of the more partisan Democrats, both on VJ and in the rest of the USA.

The way I see it, it could just happen to an extent that even the less palatable candidates might stand a chance. That would not be a bright spot in American political history.

As an independent voter, I did NOT vote for Obama last election. He was a naive candidate and I was aware that many of his campaign promises would not be possible. However in the past year, his ability to compromise has certainly won me over. In fact this will be the first election I will be voting for a democratic president.

But ultimately it depends on who is nominated doesn't it? The choice will be between that person and Obama. I know a lot of people who could vote for someone like Romney or Hunstman but never someone like Perry or Bachmann who are just too polarizing for independents. I'm not saying Obama deserves to be re-elected, just that right now the far right has too much control in the Republican party, and they could very well pass up an opportunity to take the presidency - just as they passed on an opportunity to take the senate in 2011 by thinking sharon angle and christine o'donnell were sensible candidates.

What's missing in your post is the reference to the Tea Party. The reasonable candidates you mention (Romney, Huntsman) are the antithesis of the TP. The radicals you mention (Perry, Bachmann, Angle, O'Donnell) are its luminaries. The fate of the GOP hangs on the balance of whether the party establishment can control the TP (Toilet Paper), or whether the TP controls it.
