Hi Everyone,

My Fiance's visa was approved today! We are really happy. However when she was at the US Embassy in Cairo, the person at the Window (before the Consular) asked her if she could leave before June. My Fiance said yes... then the Consular approved her and said she would get the Visa in 10 days.

1) Today being the 22 of May, in 10 days that's June 1.

2) Do you think we should buy her ticket to come now? or when Visa is in hand?

3) has anyone had to deal with this before? Our original Interview date was back in Jan 30 but because the Egyptian Revolution - she just had it today. What is the usual expiration date on the Visa?

Anyways - we're really happy... just a bit confused and trying to make the best plan moving forward.

Your fiance has 6 months to enter the US, as the K1 is valid for 6 months. Hope that helps.

My suggestion would be not to purchase a ticket leaving the day after that 10th day. If something should delay that for a day or two you might get stuck with missing the flight.

Better to reserve a flight maybe a week after that 10th day and do it now to save on the reservation in advance 2-3 weeks and yet still give yourself time in case there is any delays in getting the visa.

Congrats and good luck!

Maybe the officer just asked that question to see if you're fiancee is willing to leave for US right away, just trying to see her availability and wants to hear how she responds to the question. Hmmm that's how I view it. COngratulations on your approval. We are on the process of scheduling my fiancee's appointment as well, we are just waiting for the Letter of Eligibility from the Consulate in Manila.

Hello Congratulations for the Approval, the person at that window was saying that because your fiancee probably had her medical in December 2010 and it will expire in June but don't count on that very much, give them a call before June comes and ask them if you have to do anything at this point, but your fiancee will most likely to receive her visa in a day or two, Good Luck

Find a job you love to do, and you will never work another day in your life.

This is only partially correct...

The Visa can be valid for up to 6 months but cannot exceed the validity of the Medical Exam. In some countries the Medical is good for 1 year, others it is only 6 months.

If the Op's SO had their exam in Jan, 2011 and Egypt's medicals are only valid for 6 months the the visa would expire sometime in June unless she got a new medical in which case she could get a Visa with 6 months validity.

My fiance just had the same situation. His interview was on Jan 12 and he completed his medical a few days before then. His visa was approved and finally issued but they asked him if he would be traveling prior to July 9, if not they gave him the option to redo the TB test and have the visa reissued for the full 6 month validity.

It is correct that the K1 is valid for 6 months, but most ppl receive it shortly after their intervew, so their travel dates are not that much of a concern. From what the embassy told me, the TB test is only valid for 6 months, that's why the visa is only valid that long.

Wait for the visa to arrive before booking anything. Remember, after arrival the 90 day period can go quickly. Use as much of the six month period the visa is usable to plan everything. After the marriage the Adjustment of Status (AOS) can go slowly and travel back home can be difficult unless you also have applied for Advance Parole (AP).

Regardless of the question of being able to leave in June, plan your actions carefully with much thought.
