The covert operation that killed Osama bin Laden produced new evidence that the “emir” of al Qaeda actively commanded the terror group’s affiliates in Yemen, Somalia and other parts of North Africa and was not just an inspirational leader.

Materials found in bin Laden’s compound include hard drives, thumb drives and a dedicated fiber-optic cable used for point-to-point access to the Internet, according to two U.S. officials who read initial after-action reports on the raid.

...

The officials said investigators already uncovered new leads on the location of other senior al Qaeda leaders.

...

One U.S. intelligence official who asked not to be named said “a peripheral scan of the data suggests that he provided strategic guidance and direction to al Qaeda’s affiliates. We knew he had contact with the affiliates through couriers, but the evidence we have now is that he delivered the strategic direction to many of these groups.”

...

A U.S. official who asked not to be named said bin Laden gave broad orders to al Qaeda affiliates, such as orders to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, to attack the continental United States. He also said bin Laden received payments from al Qaeda’s affiliates and approved mergers of affiliates.

Mary Habeck, an expert on al Qaeda at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, said bin Laden moved to the Abbottabad compound to take charge of the affiliates that were forming in 2005 and 2006.

“I absolutely am convinced the reason he moved there in 2005 and 2006 is that he needed to take closer control of his globalized Jihad,” she said.

...

Ms. Habeck, a strategic planner for the National Security Council during the George W. Bush administration, said: “I envision bin Laden’s role in operations as similar to the secretary of defense,” a leader who does not direct every soldier’s activity but provides overall direction and command.

Barrack Osama planted it there. He's now going to head up Al Qaeda and bring about it's terrible goals from the inside while all you lefty knobends believe he's a US citizen with US interests at heart. As a cunning mastermind, Barrack Osama is brilliant and has everyone apart from Paul fooled. What a guy!

I believe that the real prize in killing this vermin will be not that he is dead, but the discovery of his rat's nest and all it's incoming and outgoing trails. I also believe that a whole lt of politicians in some countries are not very happy at all about this, most especially in Pakistan.

They could have got the rats nest without killing him. His death is irrelevant to finding the records.

As much as it would have been cool to bring him to court, I don't like the complications associated with detaining him. I think we'd be at more of a risk of his fanatic fan base trying to free him.

Bloomberg Says Security for Terror Trial to Cost $216 Million

AP

New York City officials say security during the trial for suspects in the Sept. 11 attacks will cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

(VS)..... A few oz of lead. This trial would cost even more.

So we should all by pass the court system because it's expensive and settle all of our differences (no matter how monumental they are) through a good ol' fashioned shoot-'em-up. Ok. Got it.

I'm glad Osama is dead and can no longer tarnish Muslim's image through his actions and inspirations. I would've really like him tried in court, convicted, and executed. It would've shown the world that no matter how tough it might be, the rule of law will always prevail and other such things.

We certainly shouldn't be in the business of bypassing the court system. In Bin Laden's case I think its entirely plausible that the guy was shot because the soldiers were taking no chances - of him either fighting back, or running the risk of him escaping . When you're dealing with the most dangerous man alive, it's not really surprising that they'd shoot first and ask questions later.

Would it have been possible to try Bin Laden? Sure, but I think it would have been a global media circus, especially if he were tried in the US. For a start they'd have to do it behind closed doors (a public trial gives the guy publicity and a platform for his views) and if you remember that the secret trials of 3rd rate Al Qaeda folks were extremely controversial, it's difficult to imagine what it would be like to try Number 1 the same way.

When US troops landed in Normandy in WW2 they didn't arrest and try Nazi soldiers they ran into. They shot them. That's what you do when at war.

Some of you seem to have no understanding of this at all. Bin Laden was not a common criminal. He waged an act of war on the American people and has now become victim of the war he started.
