Oklahoma Colder than the South Pole This Morning

After being buried with roughly 2 feet of snow Wednesday, outstandingly cold air has pooled over parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas and neighboring states. This morning was the coldest in recorded history for some areas.

At 7 a.m. CST, it was colder in northeastern Oklahoma than at the South Pole.

The Oklahoma Mesonet reported a low temperature of -31° F at Nowata, Okla.

As AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Eric Wanenchak pointed out, the temperature at the South Pole was -23° F at 7 a.m. CST this morning.

I have an old family photo of my grandfather taken in northern OK in the early 1920's that showed snow drifts up to the top of a fence he posed in front of.

And I've been up to OK in the summer to visit relatives when the temps hit over 100*F. Dry as a bone with almost no appreciable humidity. The sweat evaporates as soon as it comes out of your skin.

Needless to say OK is not the type of country for pussies.

This headline would have meant the same thing but come across very differently.

How does one go about saying such meaningless things as this? You can only put 16 pancakes in a doghouse because an average car has four doors. It is exactly as precise and meaningful.

It is summer and it is still -23 deg at the south pole. Yeah, really getting toasty down there.

More and more people are beginning to realize how ridiculous all this is.

lately the weather here has been insane. it was 65° the end of january. we had a blizzard 2-1/2-2, another foot of snow 2-8/2-9, this morning it was -6°(okc), they're predicting 60° this sunday & 70° by next wed.-thurs.

-6 to 70! Wow! And the polar regions are warming four times faster than THAT which means they will be 280 degrees OR they will be 70 degrees within the next few hours.

I rememer once in west Texas, this was before global warming when my oldest son was young. we had about a foot of snow on March 6th! usually by March we didn't get any more snow, but that year (before GW) we did. It was on a Sunday. 4 days later it was 80+ degrees and I came home from work to find all the local kids outside in shorts and t-shirts having a snowball fight! There was some remaining piles of snow in shady spots and the kids were having a ball! One Sunday I was freezing my @ss off shoveling snow so I could get the front door open, the next Sunday I got a sunburn working outside in the yard at 80+ degrees.

Since global warming, that never happens any more.

My meaningless fact came from data on ocean temperature increase. I admit it has no relevance to the OP, although I wouldn't go so far as to say it's meaningless. I posted it because it seems to have become a trend to try and relate irrelevant or meaningless facts to global temperature.

The thread you posted today about the amount of snow in your driveway also is meaningless (in regards to global temperature). I am sure it is a fact however. Comparing the temperature of Antartica in summer to Oklahoma in winter is meaningless. Comparing the temperature of 2 different places is meaningless period. They are all interesting facts. They have nothing to do with global temperature change.
