NEW YORK — U.S. airlines have used surging oil prices to justify fare increases of up to $60 per ticket since the start of the year. But the rising cost of fuel isn't the only reason it's getting more difficult to find cheap fares. The improving economy, a shrinking supply of seats and industry consolidation are also to blame. [...] "This is probably going to be the worst year we have seen in 10 years in terms of finding bargains," says Tom Parsons of BestFares.com, a website for travel deals.

Even before turmoil in the Middle East drove oil prices higher, airfares were climbing. [...] The cheapest available August flight from Miami to Paris cost $1,250 this week, 53 percent higher than last year, :o according to SmarterTravel. [...] Planes are 82 percent full on average, compared with 70 percent full before the recession hit in late 2007. [...] Six airlines have combined into just three over the past 14 months — Delta and Northwest, Continental and United, Midwest and Frontier — leaving bargain-hunters with fewer choices. [...] It isn't just the base fare getting more expensive. Checking bags, reserving an aisle seat and other services are no longer universally free.

Another change working against leisure travelers is the budding dispute between airlines and online travel sites. The airlines want to pay the sites lower commissions for each ticket purchased. The result for fliers: Not all available flights can be found on some sites. For instance, Orbitz, Expedia and Hotwire no longer list American Airlines flights. "It's just more work for the consumer to figure out who has the best fare," says Anne Banas, executive editor of travel advice site SmarterTravel.

Despite everything working in the airlines' favor, the industry is not expecting a comfortable ride over the next year. While U.S. airlines earned a combined $4.1 billion in 2010, the rising cost of fuel threatens to push many of them into the red in 2011. Fuel accounted for almost 25 percent of the airlines' operating expenses last year, the biggest cost after labor. Jet fuel topped $3 a gallon last week and is now up almost 50 percent from last year. Even if prices rise no further, airlines will have to raise average fares by 10 percent just to break even, says Herbst.

My heart goes out to them as well.

How are you holding up? Don't you wish you could just jump into some some magic teleport machine and find yourself back in the US next to your hubby within a second?

I am having the worst time dealing with this separation this time around. It almost seems like it's getting worse each time.

Sometimes I think ithe easiest thing would be NOT SEEING EACH OTHER AT ALL. Then somehow you get used to your everyday skype-relationship (Skypenshionship ;) and life is somewhat bearable.

Anyway, I want to go and visit him for Memorial Day. Hopefully we'll all be done with USCIS by then. I wonder if they'll let me in - my visa is in my old name and in my old passport. I sure hope they won't have a problem with that...

Good luck. All the best. I wish us all an extra speedy process and lots of activities to busy ourselves with until it's all over.

G.

I know how you feel! It does seem to get worse for me each time. I had to leave two weeks after we got married...that was not the easiest thing to deal with. I just try to stay focused on the fact that I am lucky because I got to marry my best friend...and ten, twenty, thirty years from now I wont remember the hurt from being apart so much as the unusual journey I took to find my soul mate.

Stay strong everyone....

Aww, that's so sweet! (L) That's exactly how I feel...You're dealing with a real long-distance here... Jeez!

I remember my flight to Australia, it took a whole day and at the end I almost got arrested for bringing in a seed, oh my this was bad (My travel-group had to wait a couple hours until everything was resolved and I ended up with a written warning in my passport and threads of getting 5 years of prison if I should do it again, but I understand where they are coming from. It was just a little extreme.), but I loved, loved, loved Australia!

Gosia, is your case showing up yet or are you done with checking? :P

I'm just curious and collect the data for my spreadsheet.

I know exactly what you talking about with this Error 500 thing. I never had a problem in the US, but now here in Vienna it came up on different computers a couple times. When I change the uscis site to Spanish and do it again, it works! Weird, but true...

It means they scanned your file... They moved it from one desk to the other... Sometimes, when you get numerous "touches", it could mean you'll get approved soon. Some people had several touches and nothing happened... It's hard to tell, but at least you know something is going on with your case...
