I don't know. Were you one of the people saying it is unethical to walk away from a house? (I'm not saying you personally were...but there are those on this forum who on one hand say relocate and on the other say its unethical to walk away from a mortgage.)

Excellent point. Relocation is not really possible for many Americans without other dire consequences.

So what is your point? Nobody move to where the jobs are and the government just keeps pumping money down a rat hole?

No, I'm just pointing out the catch 22 of some people's arguments. Personally I would walk away from a mortgage for a new job in another state if I had to. But some on the far right would paint me as being unethical.

On a side note, when I was changing jobs earlier this year I did apply from coast to coast. I received interviews from roughly 33% of the firms in my area (SF)...I didn't get a bite from out of state. Why would a firm in New York bother looking at a California resume when they are swamped with local applications?

in the above case, you'd still be liable for it - the creditor always has that new job of yours to garnish.

It depends. There are quite a number of scenarios where that wouldn't happen, but for the sake of argument I'm just dealing with generics.

being unemployed and walking away - not much left for the creditor to garnish through court action. having a job in another state - they can still reach and touch you - and probably not the wisest course of action for a person in that case.

in the case of those walking away from a mortgage and still having their same job in the same area, yeah, i think that's wrong.

From my experience earlier this year companies won't hire out of state unless your a very very rare commodity. So if someone is set on relocating, they almost need to find their location, set up there cheaply and then look.

(i'll add that the ideal solution, and the one my parents used back in 2004 is that you rent a cheap apartment at your new job and pay the mortgage....though obviously this is expensive)

How many people getting the reduced income of Unemployment are making those inflated mortgage payments?

I don't know that stats, but I know that most families have two incomes. If one spouse lost their job and the other one is still working, and their mortgage is low enough, I would imagine they can manage to scrape by for a period of time.

That may or may not be true, the guy I mentioned who has been riding the Unemployment train ....well his wife took a job a few months ago in Fla, because few were available in her field where she was at.
