26 weeks should be the max. We do pay in some to receive at least that long.

Even though historically the 26 weeks has been expanded during very high unemployment? (I think even during Reagan's term?)

I think this scene from the movie Trainspotting best displays the attitude of those on the dole (both in the U.S. and U.K.) who don't really want to work.

 I (L) that film!

From what I've heard in England, it's better to stay on the dole because people get so many different benefits they end up making more money than they would if they were working in one of the crappy jobs the job centre helps them get

The amount being paid in by employers is having to be increased to make up for the huge number of people collecting and the absurd duration of benefits... I like the word collecting... transitive verb take money or prize hmmm how much more would the employer pay the employee weekly if they did not have to pay the unemployment for the mass of collectors? I like to collect money.. when I earn it...

Steven, I think you will be hard pressed to find sympathy from anyone about unemployment benefits.

Especially after they have received benefits for NINETY-NINE WEEKS! Which is an extension from the 52 weeks which was an extnsion from the 26 weeks.

Perfect time to get a job, lots of seasonal jobs available and if they do a good job they can convert it to a full time job after the holidays.

Right on! Liberals have replaced family with gov't. It used to be family took care of the elders in the family, but liberals have made it so family can throw family into a care home, let gov't pay for it and never look back.

People used to depend on family but still they now depend on gov't, they can tell family to f#ck off. It used to be that you had to stick with family like they do in 3rd world countries, but now, no need to stick with family, the gov't will be there.

I can't see this as progress.

And lucky for us, Bush, Cheney and Co. helped bring us that much closer to being a 3rd world country.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I only know of one person collecting and he has not really looked for a job, not even under the table work.

He is not a lazy guy, he doesn't feel like he could make much more if he found a job.

I know some people are in a bad situation with the job market being what it is but, is it to much to expect Americans to maybe relocate or change gears to improve their odds of a future?

I would at minimum propose cutting the amount collected by half for 6 weeks.... then ending it.

I don't know. Were you one of the people saying it is unethical to walk away from a house? (I'm not saying you personally were...but there are those on this forum who on one hand say relocate and on the other say its unethical to walk away from a mortgage.)
