I recently took a trip abroad where I met a man and we fell in love. We are planning to get married, but dont know what that'll do since Im canadian and hes american. Is there any clause in immigration for love at first sight?

No. Read the Guides. Follow the Guides.

Yes, it is the "Love at first sight clause". It says you file for a K-1 visa and you get to immigrate about 10 years faster than if you were not in "love at first sight" Isn;t that awesome???!!!

It also says you do not get to immigrate any faster than all the others that are in love at first sight. :crying:

Read the guides here and you will learn how to take advantage of this clause. Shotgun weddings to not expedite things, but they DO increase the financial requirements for sponsoring you (baby makes three) so point the "shotgun" somewhere safe any time it fires.

If you both still have lives in your respective countries, you may want a K1. It'll take about 6 months, then you can marry and join your lives and live happily ever after (assuming you're ready to relocate). What you need at the outset is solid proof of having met in person--passport stamps, boarding passes that show you were at the same place at the same time.

You can go get married right away, but that's another process and you still have to be separated for a while. To the guides!

Congratulations on your new found love..

Just take time and read the guides, and remember this process is not as warm and welcoming as us VJ'rs..

You are new to the process so start gathering your evidense.. If you aren't yet married consider the which visa suits you and your current plans... Get aquanted with requirements both the K1 and CR1/IR1 so when you make your descision, you'll know what you need to do for your petition..

Be prepared to show proof of meeting in person for the K1 or if you get married, be prepared to show proof of a legitimate relationship.. Since this is a new relationship, start gathering these things right away...

I would plan on meeting more during the waiting time for the Visa, to continue to gather proof. Gets lots of photos and start keeping call records, receipts of your trips, Passport stamps and so forth..

Good Luck...

Kenny

are you in eastern or western canada? there are only two embassys that process K1 fiance visas so if you are on teh west coast you are in luck because vancouver is a fast consulate.

If you are in ontario or east of that you will be interviewing at montreal which adds a few months to the process.

If you are planning on getting married before filing then you will be interviewing at montreal no matter what.

This could be a factor in your decision so keep it in mind.

Ah sorry that I was lazy to google it. I thought you had a different definition. Usually I thought a shotgun wedding was when some one was forced to get married even they did not want to get married. I did not know if that would apply to you.

Thanks

sometimes people just mean a fast wedding, or a fast wedding because of a pregnancy. It didn't sound like the 'unwilling partner' was applicable in this case.

My google is broken.

So what does it mean to "Ride shotgun"? In Ukraine, they use Kalishnikovs...is it still a "shotgun wedding"?

Riding shotgun, riding in the seat next to the driver, comes from the times when stagecoaches had two men on the seat: the one who drove the horses, and the one who carried the shotgun to fend off any would be bandits. Though, depending on how your mind works, you could also say that "riding a shotgun" could easily result in a "shotgun wedding".
