Your Right to a Mobile Phone!!

I was in the car today and heard a commercial for free cell phones. Apparently, people on government benefits like food stamps, WIC, HEAP, etc., may be "entitled" to a free mobile.

Not just for emergencies or anything. According to the ad, you could get free UNLIMITED minutes for a year.

My favorite part, and the one that really got me p!ssed, was at the end, the announcer said in a loud voice:

"EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT!!!!"

So, folks on goverment benefits have the "right" to a free cell phone on my tax dollars. Awesome.

Dammit, I really need to proofread my titles!

Ya, it's been going around for more than a year now. IIRC, the first program (in Texas) was for 200 minutes/month during the day, unlimited weekends, given to ppl who were at the UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE LOOKING FOR WORK.

It snowballed/grew/etc to something else.

Have you ever examined why the thought of helping those with nothing bothers you so much? Do you have a philosophy worked out about it? I'm curious.

There's a difference between 'helping' people with things they need, than giving them things they may want. At the taxpayers dime, forced, is not the way to go about things either. If they wanted to start a charitable program where people can donate on their own, then great!

Well certainly I don't like to be forced to pay for things; I don't like to be forced into anything. Yet I am. When the armed forces start inviting me to donate my unwanted weapons, then we can talk.

But the distinction you make in this context is not a distinction at all: a phone number and a way to let people contact you regarding work opportunities and housing is not a "want." It's crucial for people trying to claw their way out of despair. If you don't have a phone you are completely screwed.

How did people survive before cell phones were invented?

It's really that simple.

i think i have a pretty good grip on the quoting feature.

Goodness gracious, Paul is right. The potential employer should use pigeons to send word of employment.
