Driver who killed cyclist is investigated by immigration officials, who say he had been deported

July 17, 2010 | 8:49 am

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/07/driver-who-hit-bicyclist-had-been-deported-before.html

Immigration officials have taken on the case of a man involved in a fatal collision with a bicyclist in the Newport Coast area, saying he has a history of being ticketed for driving without a license and was previously deported by immigration authorities.

Jose Luis Huerta Mundo, 38, was being held in Orange County Jail without bail after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials ordered that he be held for possible deportation proceedings.

Court records show that in 1999, Mundo was convicted of driving with a suspended license and not having proof of insurance. In 2002, he was convicted of not having his license on him and a year later, for not having his vehicle registered. He was convicted two more times of driving without a license, in 2005 and 2006.

Mundo, a landscaper, was detained by Newport Beach police Thursday morning after his truck collided with bicyclist Michael Nine, 43, of Santa Ana. Mundo was driving a white Chevrolet stake-bed truck that collided with Nine, who was riding his bicycle near Spyglass Hill Road and Harbor Ridge Drive. Nine died from his injuries, and police are investigating what happened.

Federal authorities would not tell the Daily Pilot if and when Mundo was previously deported, but a record of a past deportation showed up when officers verified his identity at the police station, said Sgt. Evan Sailor.

The area is frequented in the morning by cyclists who coast down the swerving street.

This was the third fatal bicycle-vehicle collision here in less than a year.

American deaths soaring.

Yes... That's exactly what the article says isn't it

Guys like you dismiss the mountains of stories of illegal aliens killing Americans, but fly into a rage over the remote possibility that a US citizen might be swept up in an illegal alien enforcement action. Gee...I can see where your priorities are.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Guys like me don't throw in hyperbolic subtitles that have no relevance to the content of a posted article.

If that's what gets it up for you, good luck.

It has nothing to do with my sex life. It's just my obsevations of the mentality of the Left. Thousands of US citizens die here in the USA at the hands of illegal aliens without so much as a whimper, but the usual suspects fly into an indignant rage over someone being questioned about their immigration status for driving without a license or getting booked into a local jail. Seems like priorities are a bit skewed here. How many Americans have to die before the situation is put into perspective? Who's rights are really being violated? Who is really being harmed?

Thousands of people die every year in traffic accidents. Most of the time, its a citizen at fault. Do we see the same outrage from you when citizen Joe the Plumber plows into a car killing a family while driving drunk?

It is tragic, but not in the same league as the additional deaths that never would have occurred had the illegal alien not been present. Saying that US citizens do the same thing misses the point entirely. These crimes are committed by people that should not have the opportunity to victimize our fellow citizens in the first place. Often repeatedly, due to the failure of our government to do its job competently.

I think the issue with illegals is that the person was killed by someone who should not even have been here. I mean even the LA Times which is a very pro-immigrant(illegal and legal) loving newspaper is the one that presented this report.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Guys like you pile up individual stories and try to weave them into a compelling version of what you perceive as reality. By the way, this story is so thin with details but it is not absolutely impossible that the USC bicyclist hit the possible illegal, but regardless, one tragedy does not really do much for your POV. Putting things in to perspective, not flying in to a rage here.

That's a bit of a stretch.

Entering the US illegally and driving under the influence are both illegal acts. If a death results from either, it's still a death. Just as each act is a crime.

Our government "allows" aliens to enter. It "allows" people to buy alcohol. Are you as outraged over the deaths of innocent people by a drunk driver (due to the fact that your local government doesn't have enough cruisers to follow every alcoholic) as you are by a border-crosser?

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Well I am outraged at every drunk driver that kills a person. Does that count?

That is one of my biggest issues with illegals in USA. The court system and law enforcement doesn't know how to deal with them or they don't want to.

Be an Illegal in USA and commit a crime and they ship you back to Mexico as your punishment. If it was an American who did a crime they would have a police record, probation, or jail time.

Same scenario if you kill a cop in Texas, you get death sentence. But if your an Illegal you can get sent back to Mexico to serve out a short jail sentence.
