What about CARRY OUT? I went with a coworker to pick up our food from this Restaurant. After we payed the guy asked us : "You don't tip carry out?" . Should we tip?

Depending on how fast they were and what type of restraunt, I'd tip nothing to half of what I would do at table service.

My figuring is if I rate my server at a sit down restraunt on how fast she brings my drinks, how often she checks on us, how much attention is paid to us, then really, carry out people don't do much besides cook the food. I guess my major issue with tipping for carry out is that I don't know *where* that tip is going. Is it going to the guy who did nothing but take my order, or is it going to the guy who cooked my steak to the perfect medium, and added just the right amount of salt to my fries?

How much are you supposed to tip in those all you can eat buffet's, but they bring the drinks? I hate that by the way, but I suppose its a way to make tips, and I am just not sure what the standard is for that, and here I am an American.

Which brings me to last night, we went out to Cracker Barrel for my sis' birthday. You get a free desert with your meal on your b-day. She has a new grandbaby, and so wasnt not able to eat her food right away as she was feeding the babe while her son (he eats fast) ate, then she started. The waitress asked her what desert she wanted, we told her we want the cobbler but please wait til she is done so the ice cream wont melt. She comes back THREE times within about 2 minutes and finally brings the cobbler when my sis was only half done with her plate. I was a bit hot, instead of a relaxing meal, she rushed us for some reason, and the place was not even busy. So I only tipped about 7%, even tho she did bring everything else we wanted, she did have a real attitude. I HATE attitude! Its not like she would have had to wait long, as my sis is a fast eater too. None of us were done with our food by they time she brought it out, and we all usually share, so we were forced to go from our meal to desert before we were finished so it was NOT an enjoyable experience. Rant...

Let me tell you about carry out...

TIP PEOPLE PLEASE! The waitress doing it gets some of the tip. She still has to tip out to others though...also it's not as easy as it sounds. The food is just thrown up on the line..she has to package, get all the right condiments, keep track of all the orders, and all that. She is only making about 5 bucks an hour...if that.

Just give a few bucks. consider it the charge you pay for not cooking yourself.

Trust me. I used to do the to go window at applebees sometimes. Each server has to split time at that duty and you'd DREAD it bc you run your azz off and get jack to show for it.

I usually tip only in sit down restaurants or where you drive up and they bring it out. In a sit down restaurant i always do 20%, for the drive up usually regardless of the bill amount, $1 or $2.

I only do this because I have been working in restaurants as a 2nd job for the last couple years. (Johnny Carinos) The servers get paid 2.13 to 2.63 an hour (here in Az). They are then charged 2% of the total bill and then they usally tip share 10% to the bartender. I have had nights where it was swamped and the managers (jerks where I worked) would load you up with 5-6 tables with each table 4-6 people. In that case no matter how hard you work or how fast, you are behind.

So, for me, the best way is ask how many tables.. if they have a huge section, then I don't mind the person being slow. If they say 2 or 3 small tables, well, maybe they are a bit lazy. Now if they are just rude, I leave a penny~ Once they have enough people doing that and they are paying out for them, they should wise up!!

Ok, sorry for the long winded reply!

Is it going to the guy who did nothing but take my order

THey do more than just that. It's not an easy job...and you don't get paid more than the servers who are working for tips.

I'm going to sound like a hardass here, but... oh well.

First off, I tip 15 - 20% on the total at sit down dinners. I will tip jars and stuff too.

But I can resent it. Why is it up to me to round out the wait staff's salary?

The waitress doing it gets some of the tip. She still has to tip out to others though...also it's not as easy as it sounds. The food is just thrown up on the line..she has to package, get all the right condiments, keep track of all the orders, and all that. She is only making about 5 bucks an hour...if that.

The solution that would please me is to move to a system where 15% is automatically included in the prices on the menu. Then we all have a realistic idea of what dinner costs. If the service is outstanding, I will add to it. And waiters can be paid a living wage and not have to depend on people to tip them a certain percentage because they have to pay out busboys and pay taxes.

Just give a few bucks. consider it the charge you pay for not cooking yourself.

actually, the charge I pay for not cooking myself is buying food that is already prepared! I'm sorry, but I am not going to pay someone to put it in a bag for me any more than I will tip the cashier who bags things at the grocery store.

THey do more than just that. It's not an easy job...and you don't get paid more than the servers who are working for tips.

my nephew works very hard as a bus boy. He is very often angry because he knows the waitresses are not giving him his full share. or what he assumes it to be.

You will tip at a jar for someone getting you a donut but you resent tipping someone that goes for your drinks, serves your meal, brings you what you ask, refills your drinks?? I don't understand that.

Being a waitress is hard work. Imagine standing on your feet for 6 hours (no breaks allowed). This isn't a job people get because they like it. The restraunts have a monopoly because they are usually the only ones that will work with someones schedule and allow them to take care of kids or go to school, or take care of parents.

What is the difference if it is already added in on the menu? When you sit down, add 15%, there is the realistic price.

I would have told him to stop begging! Tipping is by choice and for good service, this is what makes some waiters/waitresses do their job so darn well.

I have always tipped at tumbleweed when I go to the carry out, the same gal is usually in there and I guess she remembers me because I do tip. Anyways I felt comfortable enough to ask her if she made the same salary as the waitresses. She told me that she was a waitresses but the nights she worked carry out her salary went up to $8.50 an hour to compensate for the lack of tipping in a carry out.

I didn't mean I resent tipping a person for their work, I meant I resent that tipping has become a mandatory thing and the argument is often that they don't get paid much, so tipping subsidizes it. I say pay them more and charge me more at the outset... why let it be random according to how good a tipper someone is anyhow? PS - I do not tip for donuts, I will tip for good service at counter places though.

I waited tables one summer, so you don't have to educate me on how hard it is. I loathed it. Would never do it again. My tipping irritations have nothing to do with how hard anyone works, it has to do with how tipping has become a mandatory thing, instead of... a tip.

Generally when I go out for a meal at a restaurant, I leave between 15-20% gratuity to the bill. There is however something that I am not sure how to deal with....

The other day I went out for lunch with some co-workers. We went to I guess what you could call a self-slrve place. Order your food, pay the cashier, food is given to you on a tray in disposable packaging, etc.

Now there was no tip jar, and if I had paid cash I would not have left a tip. However I paid with my debit card and when the man gave me my recipet to sign, there was a tip section. Not knowing what to do and feeling pressure to make a quick decision because of the line forming behind me, I made a quick decision to add a tip. What would you do in this situation?

I tip for at sit down places where I know the waiter/waitress is paid a salary based on how she makes in tips. In PA wait staff makes 2.83 an hour, expecting that the tips will make the rest up.

As for Dunkin Donuts or places that have tip jars, I rarely tip there.
