French lawmakers have approved a bill to ban the wearing of face-covering veils in public spaces, despite abstentions from many socialist and Green Party MPs.

...

The bill was approved by 335 votes, out a total of 577 MPs. Only one “no” vote was cast.

...

The bill’s initially precise wording has been changed and now refers to garments “that hide the face” rather than the “nikab” or “burqa”.

Under the bill, it would be illegal for anyone to cover their faces in public places like streets, parks, public transport or shops.

Fines of 150 euros will be imposed on those caught wearing the veil once a six month grace period to allow time to educate Muslim women about the ban has elapsed.

Men who force their wives or daughters to cover themselves face stiffer penalties of up to 30,000 euros and a one-year jail term.

So now French polices and motorbike riders will be expected to wear nothing that obstruct the face.

Seriously, there's like only 300 people in France that wear the veil. Leave it to the French to enact a law that limits the fredom of choice on all citizen only because 300 or so women decided the want to dress tradtionally.

While I support banning face covering in public for safety reasons, I find the way France went about this law to be disingenuous.

It started out as an attack on Islam, and then was made politically correct to garner more support.

You're way off cue. It was not a attack against Islam, it was a case of caring people seeing these woman wrapped in cloth concealing there identity and recognizing the injustice. I dont think this is the way to handle this situation but you wont see me protesting anytime soon.

How can you be shocked by this? France is a strictly secular nation. Should they adapt their foundations and ways to adhere to a group of religious immigrants?

What happened to the women making their own choices?

I really don't know what the solution is to all of this, for sure. But I do think that many women who cover themselves from head to toe don't feel as though they have a choice, for fear of punishment.

And now the women who want to wear it will be punished, not by their husbands but the government.

Again, I think having anti face covering laws are good idea from a public safety standpoint, but that is not how this was approached at first.
