Schwarzenegger bans welfare cards at casinos

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued an executive order barring California welfare recipients from using state-issued debit cards at casino ATMs.

Thursday's order followed a report by The Los Angeles Times that found CalWORKS cards were used to withdraw cash in more than half the casinos in the state.

The newspaper reported Thursday that welfare recipients have withdrawn more than $1.8 million in taxpayer cash at casinos since October.

Schwarzenegger's order requires welfare recipients to sign a pledge that they will use their benefits only to meet the basic needs of their families.

It also gives the state Department of Social Services seven days to come up with a plan to reduce other "waste, fraud and abuse" in the welfare program.

I don't recall any liquor stores accepting any debit cards for liquor purchases, or credit cards for that matter.

Seriously, none of the stores around here that sell liquor will accept debit or credit card. If you can get here, then that's the proof.

I felt exactly like that when I was in college and working for minimum wage. I used to work a grocery store. So I saw a lot of food stamps; healthy, grown man with food stamps. It made me cringe that here I was working my butt of paying for this strong dude to by needless things.

The things you can do and by with food stamps should be very limited. You shouldn’t be able to buy luxury items, tobacco, alcohol, lottery, toys, video games, movies, and such other things. Food stamps should be use for (wait for this, it’s a good one) food. Medicine and rent inclusive.

I'm surprised people could use their welfare money for casino. Disgusting. Way to go, Terminator. This needs to be a national policy.
