(June 9) -- A Florida teacher alleges that she was fired from her job instructing fourth-graders at a Christian school because she got pregnant before marriage -- an act school authorities labeled "fornication."

Jarretta Hamilton, 39, admitted to school authorities at Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, Fla., in 2009 that she had conceived before her marriage in April of that year. One week after requesting maternity leave, she was unemployed.

Not unless they ask for maternity leave.

Isn't that the point? She was not fire asking for maternity leave, she was fired because she was pregnant without being married. Are they going to do the same thing when a male teacher gets his girlfriend pregnant? Its the same issue.

I guess being pregnant is sure evidence of fornication ? Yes? No ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

You've seen the contract?

I haven't, no. Just pre-empting the usual line of argument taken in these types of the threads (there have been other incidences of this nature that have found their way onto VJ) - the person chose to work in a "christian" school and must therefore have known what they were getting into and must therefore abide by the rules.

There are no employment conditions that would list "fornication" as a reason for employment termination; and if there were it would be unfair and likely be struck down in the courts.
