To say one couldn't care less means that one is totally disinterested and one doesn't care at all.

'couldn't care less' is a double negative. it means I 'could care'

No it isn't. There are not 2 negatives there. IF it was I couldn't not care less it would be a double negative.

 I think it IS a double negative - "less" is a negative word that indicated the absence of something. Think of "I don't want none" - that's a double negative for the same reason.

Quick question: I've see people post saying "I resemble that remark" while I think they meant "I resent...".

Just wondering if resemble means the same thing or something, I couldn't find it in the dictionary but it boggled me that it's used a few times on here before.

They DEFINITELY mean to be saying "resemble". I remember it most from a Garfield the cat cartoon where Jon saying something like Garfield will get fatter from liking his lasagne too much and Garfield, in his droll way said..."hey, I resemble that remark".

It's like if someone said, sheesh you sure can be a slacker at work being on VJ all day and I'd say...HEY, I resemble that remark! :hehe::D

It's admitting something which COULD be taken as an insult.

"I resemble that remark!" is a classic comedy line. Anything you have read in recent popular culture containing has stolen from the past.

I myself was introduced to this line by watching Curly utter it in countless episodes of The Three Stooges. The joke proceeds like this:

(Snooty Rich Lady): "Murphy, who are those slovenly creatures at the door?"

(Murphy the butler): "The plumbers, Madam."

(Snooty Rich Lady): "Well, send them to the servant's entrance. We can't allow rifraff in the front door."

(Curly): "I resemble that remark!"

I suspect, however, that the Three Stooges stole the line themselves from Amos 'n Andy.
