Morning-After Pill May Go Over The Counter (for women 18 and above only)

If someone could buy it over the counter for a minor, they could do the same with a prescription.

I don't think this is a good idea. What prevents an older friend from buying it for a minor? I agree that a prescription is easy enough to get.

Yeah, I guess so. It just seems like it's making it even easier for minors. I suppose many would argue that that's a good thing.

I suspect you'll find there's not a whole lot of people who rely on the morning after pill as a primary contraceptive. It's used on an emergency basis, and it's expensive. I seriously doubt there's a minor out there thinking, oh good, now I can just have sex and use that every time. That's entirely and untterly unpractical.

I have mixed feeling about this. I can see how it is a good thing for some people but I think for others it is not such a good idea.

I think that if there is a problem with unprotected sex then you shoud go to the doctor or Planned Parenthood and get it taken care of.

I thought it was kind of funny that this is over the counter now but I have to swipe my drivers license anytime I want to buy a box of sudafed or cold medicine so that I can't get it more than once a week.

Whatever...I've gotten prescriptions for it several times and the last time, I was even warned by the nurse over the phone that I needed to find a pharmacy who would sell it to me, as they have the option not to. Well, out of the eleventy bazillion pharmacies in this area, my normal one was out of stock, and the second one I called had it. It was a minor inconvenience that took up probably about 15 minutes of my time, but it's not difficult, nor impossible. If someone can't deal with that process, I wonder how they dress themselves in the morning.

several times? I thought this was only suppose to be used in emergency?

Why aren't birth control pills over the counter????

I personally think they should be available over the counter, but there are several reasons I can imagine why they're not...one being that it is a long-term medicine and requires (not a lot but still) monitoring of the user over time, also that since birth control is incredibly more cost effective and common, it probably would make it easier for the youth of the world to be having sex without condoms (which is the ideal form of protection for today's youth) since they also protect from various STDs. If birth control were widely available, there would be no reason to use a condom. Emergency contraception is a totally different thing, and anyone who has taken it will tell you, you're not going to be running to the store on a daily basis (or what have you) to pick up your $30 package of Plan B. That's just not going to happen.

Is it not possible that in the-oh, 7 years-that I've been sexually active, I may have had several (meaning 3 or 4, can't remember) emergencies?

And I'm not really sure why I'm having to explain this. It is what it is.

Can I ask what it is about the morning after pill you don't like? How do you feel about birth control pills? I'm just curious because I remember the first time I went to get it, I went to the Christian help center and they mistakenly told me it was an abortion pill. If it were an abortion pill, I wouldn't take it because I am pro-life and think abortion is murder...having said that, my further research showed me that if a pregnancy has already occurred the morning after pill will be ineffective, therefore, it does not cause an abortion to occur. That's the only way I was able to take it.

Ok, I see what you mean if it doesn't abort a fertilized egg, I had the impression it could abort a fertilized egg. Though I still think if people were more careful in the first place they wouldn't have to worry about an emergency such as this. I don't agree with sex outside of marriage, so I don't really support something that gives people more of a reason to have sex anytime they want because they know they can just take a pill afterwards to avoid pregnancy. I know sex out of marriage happens anyway, and there are condoms and birth control pills already for that. I just think people should be more responsible. (I know rape is a different issue, I am not talking of that but rather 2 consenting people). In a marriage I don't see anything wrong with becoming pregnant even if they accidentally didn't try to, so then I don't know why a married couple would need this pill. It seems it's just a cop-out pill. I've never taken birth control pills(use other methods) but I am not really against them either. I just didn't want to take them, for my own reasons (not religious reasons). :)

I think it's a good thing for the most part. As someone who can't take bc pills because of interractions with other medications, I would just hope these would interract safely with other drugs.

That's true, and I don't think those situations are uncommon. For example, with our situation-I'm about to get married, but I will be spending the first couple years here without my husband. For us, getting pregnant is not an option until he gets home. I would not be able to survive and support myself and the child. However, even after being on birth control pills for a couple years now (to treat my PCOS), I can tell you that if it weren't for having to take my Ambien every night to sleep, I would still be forgetting to take them-sometimes up to 2 or 3 nights would I forget. It's not as easy to remember as you might think-even with a routine and a set time, it's so easy to forget. For people like me, the morning after pill would be my savior in that case.

I think its a good idea.

As for birth control pills, many countries allow women to buy them over the counter as well.
