LONDON (Reuters) - A British woman has been ordered by police to take down a sign on her garden gate which read "Our dogs are fed on Jehovah's Witnesses."

Janet Grove, who owns a terrier puppy called Rabbit, insisted the sign was a gentle joke to discourage callers at her front door.

Her late husband put the sign up more than 30 years ago when members of the church called at their house on Christmas Day.

But police were forced to act after receiving a complaint.

"We were informed by a member of the public who found the sign to be distressing, offensive and inappropriate," a police spokesman said. "Officers attended the address and the sign was voluntarily taken down."

Yet they will do nothing about people banging on your door, on your day off trying to sell you gospel, magazines or household cleaners! Vowed this week I am buying a no solicitation sign, gawdy but so sick of these people coming to my door!

Two times this week, had people showing up trying to sell some magical cleaning potion. First guy comes trompsing across my lawn, "hi beautiful"! I am sitting on the ground weeding the flower bed, while he is telling me all the wonderful things his product can do. I ever so sweetly ask "will it pull these weeds?", he said no and left without another word lol.

When I move into a house, maybe I'll use such a sign. In the US, I can always challenge any fines or removal orders in court--remember that the country has a massive surfeit of lawyers!

the only solicitors we usually get at home are JWs, political campaign workers, and the occasional boy/girl scout. we have a 'beware of dog' sign and keep the gate closed so people are wary of coming in uninvited.

i don't see the big deal... it was tongue-in-cheek. our neighbors have a 'trespassers will be shot' sign... *shrugs*

people are offended by any and everything these days.

Sometimes I get lucky and on my drive home i can see the Jehovah's Witness group walking in my hood so I go home and make sure there is no sign of life in my house for the next hour. I just don't like having someone come to my house to promote their religion, no matter which one it is.
