Interesting how much counties from different states charge for copies of marriage certificates.

On top of that, some make you wait for them. We got ours the same day as our civil wedding, which was pretty nice.

No kidding! Ours was free and she gave us two copies. I think only because we knew someone who knew someone though.

It says "certified copy" in the guide, i assume that's why people think it's supposed to be certified.

With ours, we took the license signed by the officiant to the county office, and they kept it. They then gave us two certified copies for free, and charged us $5 each for two more. They kept the "original".

Lots of people. In fact one person at least in the posts somewhere above yours. a COPY is all that the instructions ask for. But take the original to the interview (if you have one)

Perhaps the VJ AOS Guide was put together at a time when the official USCIS instructions requested a certified copy but the requirements and official instructions have since been changed? I don't know--just a guess. Anyway, perhaps this is a good reminder that while VJ is a helpful resource, you may not want to follow the advice here blindly. Information can be out of date, or just plain wrong. The most authoritative resources are those that are provided directly by the USCIS.

Certified copies here in Jefferson County, CO are only $1.25.

I just sent a regular photocopy with my petition and it wasn't an issue. When I went to my AOS interview in Denver I brought a certified copy along to be safe, but it wasn't needed. I specifically asked the IO if he wanted it and he said that it wasn't necessary as long as the photocopy is legible. I wouldn't waste my money on a certified copy, especially if they want to charge you $10+ for one, its just absolutely ridiculous.
