OK, so here is our situation.

My Fiance had her interview in Moscow Jan. 14th. She had some delays getting her police report so except for that our paperwork was perfectly complete.

However, I am currently unemployed. To cover my bases I asked my Mom, a federal employee, to co-sponsor which she did without a problem.

So.. now we get to the point of the post.

During the interview the "smiling lady" asked my girl if we planned on having kids to which she responded yes. She then asked.. how will you support kids if neither one of you is working. Fiance responded she will get a job if she has to. Smiling lady said.. "it will be hard for you to get a job"

Fiance left the interview with instructions to send her police paper in and then they will make a final decision.

But.. now a week and a half later Fiance is FREAKING OUT that they will deny her visa because I am not working at the moment.

So.. based on the cumulative knowledge.. what do you all think? And.. any advice to help calm her down?

Thanks in advance!

Financial support is a requirement of the K-1 visa. Ultimately it may hurt you but until you hear back it is out of your control, and freaking out will not help :)

I don't think you have anything to worry about if you met the requirements under the affidavit of support (I-134) along with your co-sponsor. Sounds like the interviewer lost sight that they should be keeping their personal opinions to themselves.

Well my last three years were good before I was laid off and I have $$$ in the bank and my Mom makes like 5X the poverty line so we should be fine.. but still her being nervous got to me. I never even considered that we might be denied until she brought it up..

No worries about sponsorship. FYI a better answer would be "we have his mother to help us...as you see with her attached I-134 and my fiancee will get a new job" But that is water under the bridge. You will be fine.

No worries. Tell your fiancee to just calm down and just continue following up on your case status!

Thanks Gary and Alla. I wish I would have considered the CO might ask that question. We did so much prep and missed that one.

BTW.. I have spent some time in Donetsk. Nice town. :)

I think you should be fine. She only said she plans to have a child sometime in future. Is not that she is pregnant already or bringing a child of her own without having a job.

Tell her to calm down! Everything is going to be just fine!!!

Keep us posted =)

The immigration process is very frustrating and we have all freaked out from time to time. Most times, it was for nothing, though.

So, as long as you have a co-sponsor, you should have no problems.

Best wishes!!!

I still don't have a job and I got my husband a K1 over 2 years ago! My mom co-sponsored my husband as well. A lot of people get their loved ones here when they are in college (like me) or shortly after they graduate and have no problems. In this economic climate, more and more people are getting K1's with a cosponsor due to being laid off. The US doesn't care who is providing for the fiance as long as someone is.

I'd say she wound up with a jerk for an interviewer, it could go either way. I really don't think they should have a right to deny a US Citizen a wife, they don't do anything about these illegals coming over here and they take welfare too and they don't stop that, but they complain about a good US Citizen.

It would have been better if she said in the future you plan on having kids when you both have plenty of money, because you don't believe in having kids unless there is plenty of money to take care of them.

All you can do is pray, We got to pray just to make it today.

Normally they will tell you right away if you passed, so it doesn't look good if they have to think about it, but it's not no until they say no.

Thanks Gary and Alla. I wish I would have considered the CO might ask that question. We did so much prep and missed that one.

BTW.. I have spent some time in Donetsk. Nice town. :)

Donets'k has its points but basically is a coal mining/steel smelting/gas mining town. The "Gary, Indiana" of Ukraine, in the heavily industrial Dombass region that strecthes all across east Ukraine and into SW Russia to the Volga. It is not a place where "the sun shines" as they say. (the ciontrast between Volgograd and Mosocw or St. Petersburg is unbelievable) But they have made big improvements in the last few years and one can see there is hope. The new world class soccer stadium will help, one hopes, if they get it finished in time for Euro2012. Environmentalists from the USA would just go APE-SH*T to see this area, they have NO CLUE. No to mention being downwind of Chernobyl. the area gets honorbale mention in medical journals for being an area where people have the world's highest concentration of mercury in their systems.

Hey, one cannot always prepare for all the questions, I think you will be fine.

Take it easy. It is not unusual for Moscow to delay an answer for a few days and many other consulates do it also. I can list seberal cases in the past few weeks in both Moscow and Kiev where the answer was "unknown" until the visa arrived. The OP did not even have all the papers they needed, they did not have a police certificate at the interview so there was NO POSSIBILITY they would be told the visa was approved that day. If one goes to the interview un-prepared, one will not get the approval that day. It happens all the time and is no big deal. I do not believe the OP is concerned that he did not receive word that day. The worms have started to eat at his fiancees brain that maybe there is something else. There isn't. Deliver the police certificate and you will be OK

It is not the consulate's responsibility to "do something" about illegal immigration EXCEPT trying to prevent visa fraud, which is what they are doing with the questions. If you WANT "someone to do something" then you should not complain when they do something. They do not have the authority to deny you a wife, they DO have the authority to deny your wife or fiancee entry into the USA, two very different things.

The question asked was not really sensible and probably falls into the "inert filler" class of questions. The interviewer sounds like they were no more prepared to ask the question than she was to answer it, but that is not unusual either. If they ask 10 questions, maybe 2 or 3 are really important. It really is of no concern of the consulate how the couple pays for diapers, they have a co-sponsor. Unlike the Phillipines, co-sponsors are not frowned on or rejected offhand in Moscow.

Financial support is not a requirement for all consulates.
