Because the thread is about Martin Luther King, and the tangent I responded to was about why its apparently scandalous to some people that there is "Black pride" but that "White pride" is considered racist.

Its considered racist for the reasons I have said.

No well thats fine, I was just hoping you'd test your theory on a broader (more realistic) level.

Care too?

Oh yes, now I remember what I was thinking about, he does not is what the case was.

But often people who are half or part black call themselves AA, I always found this interesting in America:

If you are white with just a tinge of anything but white then you're not white

If you're black with whatever else nationality mixed you're still black...

Speaking for myself, being English is and has always been more important to me (as a part of my identity) than being White. In fact, I have never given much thought to the latter and I can honestly say that it is of very little importance to me.

Its of little importance to me because I've never been exposed to racial prejudice or discrimination, and because I have generations worth of cultural identity behind me.

Danno - if you want to start a new thread, feel free. We don't need to muddy the waters of this one with side issues anymore than we already have.

I just find it interesting why some people refer to themselves as AA, and not just American, when both their parents are not AA and it's clear that they're mixed. Sorry for the sidetrack, just an interesting observation I had to ask about as a foreigner since the topic is about race and I never saw this before.

You do realize most White americans are a "blend" of white and while they might have majority this or that.....there is not often a single European country to identify with.

Also it seems nearly all Europeans after a few generations in this country become virtually indistinguishable from other Europeans, not only in appearance but also in manor speech and habit.

While it wasn't Slavery which Brought and mixed White people together in America the end result is the same, we have little knowledge or connection to our ancestral home land(s).

Perhaps using your theory White people too should tallyho around the generic "white" label.

I agree that there is nothing simple about this, Danno.

But one might reasonably wonder why certain cultural traditions from those countries continue to be practiced - and why people from the US choose to celebrate St Patrick's Day, the Oktoberfest, the Cologne festival, Greek Independence etc. etc. etc.

Except for a Hun and a Mick several generations back, my family is good English stock going back to Jamestown. Americans are not purebreds in any sense, but they tend to be mostly homogeneous, often even to region of the former country.

Race is becoming less important in the US, a legacy in part directly attributable to MLK, and is well worth celebrating. Before the 1960's no one was even considering the concepts he was proffering.

Perhaps that the users of this website are doing their part to blur the line between the races is a testament to the acceptance his ideas.

Mods/Organizers - please go ahead and move this thread to the General Polls Section.

Thank you. :)

Or, just remove the poll.

Moved from Off Topic to General Polls as OP requested.

This topic has certainly brought out a lot of interesting comments - some of the more 'colourful' ones (yes, pun intended) we could have done without. Please feel free to disagree but don't use your disagreement to attack or insult others for having a difference of opinion - discuss the topic and not the posters. This topic is racially sensitive - please try not to cross the line into racism.

I am torn on this one.

YES, becuse he was a great Republican.

NO because Jesus Christ is the ONLY other individual person that has a national holiday in his honor, and that one has been usurped by commercialism long ago. Not saying that MLK wasn't a great man, he was, but what of other great men, black and white, in our country's history? Lincoln, who laid the groundwork for King and was himself assassinated for the same cause, LOST his holiday. Replaced by "president's Day" so Lincoln gets tossed in the mix with Carter and Nixon and Hoover. Wonderful. Washington lost his day for the same reason. The "Father of our Country" is now lost in the mix with Andrew Johnson. I can make a long list of black and white men that deserve a holiday as well as MLK. Our founders who set up a means by which we could make the progress we have are ignored completely. Even small villages have "founder's day", not our USA. What of Jackie Robinson? What of FDR or JFK...no holidays for either.

It's true, this country (unlike so many others) have a very long list of great men and women, all of whom are equally deserving of an honor of this magnitude.

I'd like to see a week off around the Fourth of July to celebrate all our American heroes. In exchange, get rid of President's and Labor and Memorial and MLK and all that. 1 week in July to celebrate them all. And it's July, it'll be a week people can actually use ;)
